Star One
I have to make a correction to
my news of last week.
The good news remains good news. Star One will release a live album
with some pieces on DVD. The rest of my news, was a bit too fast
without consulting the master himself. The release date, the title and
the number of songs were only rumours. You can find the truth
on
www.ayreon.com
If you have been filming one of the concerts in
Rijssen or Tilburg (or maybe even another one), contact Arjen and
maybe they can use your footage for the DVD.

Spock’s Beard
Personal Letter from the new
Spock's Beard
Greetings all Beard fans!
As the dust begins to settle over Neal's departure from the band, we
just wanted to say hi and let you know what was going on and what was
going through our heads. First of all, we've been reading the message
board on the SB website, and your positive reaction to us continuing
as a band is absolutely awesome. You guys are truly amazing and we're
very lucky to have you on board with us. Reading those messages is
totally inspiring and it really helps us to go on to the next thing.
Obviously, Spock's Beard will be a different band. In the next few
months we'll be experimenting with new sounds and styles to see which
one fits the best. We kind of wanted to do that anyway, and there is
no better time than now. It will still definitely be Spock's Beard,
though, so don't worry about us trying to become the old guy version
of N'Sync.
To speculate on exactly what we are going to sound like is impossible
at the moment, even for us, but we can say that we're formulating some
really cool ideas and we think you'll like it.
So. . .once again we want to say thanks for your tremendous support
through all of this, and we're looking forward to recording and
touring in the near future.

Marillion
"Separated Out" is an extensively researched, comprehensive and
factual history of the band: from early pub gigs through the
pioneering days of Script for a Jester's Tear to the chart topping
Kayleigh-era and onto the highs of Brave and beyond to the present
day.
There have been a number of attempts to write the story of Marillion
over the years. Depending on who you talk to, that story has many
versions. In researching and writing this book Jon Collins has spent
many months talking to everyone who has ever had anything to do with
the Marillion story, including the five of us.
This new book will be published 30 November 2002 on general release.
Racket Records will also be selling the new book in both paperback and
limited edition hardback (signed if you hurry, see on the link below),
and expect to have copies in stock by 9 December.

Along with the Marillion story comes the outside-of-Marillion story as
well. Racket Records has just released an 8-track solo projects
sampler CD, "AWOL", featuring music from Steve Hogarth's "H Band", Ian
Mosley's "Postmankind", Steve Rothery's "Wishing Tree", and Pete
Trewavas's "Transatlantic" projects - at 2 pounds, a great way to get
a taste of the music the band make outside of Marillion!

Full details about the "Separated Out" book and "AWOL" CD are
available at
http://www.marillion.com/racket.
...And now it's off to the studio to start rehearsing for the
Christmas shows!

Gazpacho
A lot of the songs
of this band is downloadable on their site. Try them out, you won't
regret it.
Gazpacho are "alive and
wild"..
A daunting task
finishing this 6 minute piece... "Ease your mind" was co-produced (a
first for us) by someone who has turned into quite a friend.. Mr Peter
Kearns, producer currently residing in New Zealand.. yes, you heard
us, New Zealand. You can't get further away from Norway if you tried..
Peter Kearns is a New Zealand based producer/arranger/composer. Since
the eighties he has written and recorded with various Australasian
acts and for a year or two collaborated with legendary American record
producer Kim Fowley. He has also worked as keyboard sideman to such
New Zealand acts as Shona Laing (ex Manfred Mann's Earthband) and Dave
Dobbyn. He has a taste for the musically adventurous and inbetween
recording projects, works on his own music and contributes articles to
various music-based websites. After a series of voice and e-mails back
and forth, 4 versions were made for this.. and the one you're going to
listen to is what we're happy with. Anyways, we really hope you enjoy
this one.. As a special thank you for helping us spread the buzz on
gazpacho, we're allowing this song to be downloaded from mp3.com for 1
week starting today(after this, it will return to streaming). Go over
to the site now to get your hands on 'Ease your mind'!

New drummer!
We're pleased to
announce the newest addition to the band: Geir Digernes. A well known
drummer in Norway. His history can boast over 100,000 album sales with
Atlantic signed band, Sons of Angels, their peak of popularity in the
80's. A specialist in drums, he has performed as a session drummer in
various projects with well known artists in Norway.

The
Return of Änglagård
Text by Rob LaDuca, NEARfest
President on
www.nearfest.com :
An irregular NEARfest
tradition is reuniting great "retired" or "split-up" progressive rock
bands to perform for sold-out audiences at our annual festivals. With
the resounding successes of the Happy the Man reunion at NEARfest
2000, and the Nektar reunion at NEARfest 2002, we decided to try once
again to help resurrect an excellent, beloved prog band. Unlike the
previous two reunions, however, we did not cast our net back to the
1970s... but just back 10 or so years.
Chad and I are thrilled and overjoyed to present
to the progressive rock community, and the music scene as a whole, the
grand return to active duty of the mighty Swedish prog legends...
Änglagård. Anglagard will perform as the 4th band on Sunday’s bill at
next year’s NEARfest.

Änglagård released two stunning albums in the
early 1990s, "Hybris" and "Epilog”, which are beloved among prog fans
around the world. Featuring compositions of incredible power, depth,
emotion, and subtlety, this pair of albums are chock full of rippling
Hammond organ, soaring mellotron, analog synth solos, thunderous
Rickenbacker bass, pastoral flute lines, and biting guitar leads,
driven by furious but musical percussion work. Seldom has a rock band
made better use of dynamics than Anglagard. The music can turn on a
dime from whisper quiet to very heavy. Änglagård toured around the
world during their brief but glorious career, highlighted by headline
performances at the first two Progfests in California. After Progfest
1994, the band dissolved... until its rebirth today.
Änglagård has been rehearsing over the past
several months and composing new music towards a third album to be
released some time next year. They are renewed and energized and are
looking forward to being a progressive musical force for some time to
come.. We at NEARfest are absolutely delighted to have been a catalyst
for this reunion. We are even more delighted to be bringing the band
to the US to perform for you next summer. Be sure not to miss
Anglagard’s grand reunion show at NEARfest 2003!

Peter
Gabriel.
Tour Gabriel has an impressive start in Chicago
After an absence of more than 10 years, Peter Gabriel restarts his
touring live with "Growing up Live". The new tour opened Tuesday night
in the United Centre of Chicago with an impressive production, which
is led by the Canadian Robert LePage, who also did the “Secret World
Live” tour in 1993. Gabriel mostly picked material from his recent
album “Up”, helped by veterans like Tony Levin on bass and David
Rhodes on guitars. The new musicians in the band are Rachel Z on
keyboards, multi-instrumentalist Richard Evans, Ged Lynch on drums and
Melanie Gabriel for the backing vocals. Another new asset for
Gabriel’s stage act is the Blind Boys Of Alabama. Septuagenarians with
age-defying, powerful vocals, the quartet sat in the centre of the
stage as the band moved in closer for "Sky Blue" and “In Your Eyes”.
This time, Gabriel has an arsenal of
high-tech toys, beginning with a versatile centre stage and a second
stage suspended above it, and he uses them to great effect.
A large, clear and dimpled ball emerged from the dangling balloon, and
Gabriel climbed inside as the music for "Growing Up" began. He rolled
the massive sphere around the perimeter of the stage, like a hamster
in a toy, narrowly avoiding plowing down band members and their
instruments.
For fans who had endured ten years of waiting for Gabriel's
return to the concert stage, it was a highly satisfying night of music
and theatrics.

Mindgames
Mindgames is a new Belgian
band. Although they already released a demo in 1999, they now released
their first full CD.

Mindgames is a band writing
own song in a progressive and symphonic way. Their compositions are
inspired by the style and ideas of Yes, Zappa, Pink Floyd, Spock’s
Beard, Marillion,…
Mindgames do not want to copy
or imitate. Therefore they evaluate and consider very carefully every
new idea. It is a deliberate choice to create a proper sound: complex,
surprising, but simple, authentic and enjoyable.

Their new album “International Daylight” will be
presented on november 23 in JH Merlijn, Kerkhofstraat 54, 1970
Wezembeek-Oppem, Belgium.

Karnataka
Delicate Flame Of Desire
The new album of Karnataka is due beginning next year. This has been
announced by the band with the following litterary masterpiece:
'This much anticipated new release begins an ambitious new chapter
that makes for a compelling listening experience. Sensual, spiritual
and unrestrained by musical boundaries, the dramatic, multi-layered
arrangements combine with haunting vocal melodies to create a powerful
and epic work where panoramic soundscapes give way to fragile moments
of acoustic intimacy. From the evolving intensity of Heart Of Stone to
the desolate imagery of Out Of Reach, this is an album which embraces
the agony and ecstasy of the delicate flame of desire.'
Delicate Flame Of Desire is officially released in January 2003
through Immrama Records/Voiceprint but will be available exclusively
from this website from Nov 23rd. Pre-orders are now being taken at
www.karnataka.org.uk.

Renaissance
A special message from Annie
from Renaissance:

Dear Friends,
I am writing to you all on
behalf of myself, Michael, and Terry, to give you the update on
Renaissance.
There have been many wonderful times since the beginning when I joined
the band in the 70’s and these experiences will last for ever. The
music business has changed drastically and seems to be on a downward
spiral. It is now time to close another chapter in the history of the
band, and it has been a hard decision to make.
The memories are so vast, and dreams came true for all of us through
the fans, travelling around the world and performing alongside major
talent wherever we went and having the luxury of performing with the
world’s best orchestra’s too. The early days were especially memorable
with John Tout and Jon Camp in the band. We were very unique and
(thanks to the original Renaissance, without whom I would not be
writing this) were to receive many accolades for the music we created.
Looking back we really wrote some wonderful music and that body of
work will be heard for years to come, thanks to modern technology.
The last working personnel of this band was quite incredible, Rave
Tesar, David Keyes and Mickey Simmonds completed the full complement
that we took to England and Japan in 2001. They are remarkable
musicians who performed the music with great sensitivity and love for
the music we had written through the years, no one could have done
better.
Tuscany was a joy to make and the ‘live’ CD we are also very proud of.
We are living in different times now and it is time to move forward
gracefully.
The future for everyone is more precious than ever, but more important
is living in the moment, that is why we made this decision, a very
difficult one.
Michael is working on his musical of ‘Scheherazade’ and Terry is
working on his own solo CD ‘South of Winter’, to be released soon
(info on both of these will go on the Renaissance site).
Myself, I am still working
with my own band in the USA and am redesigning my website to
accommodate new works.
We thank you from our hearts
for being a part of this incredible journey.
Love and Peace Always,
Annie
Terry Sullivan informs us that
he is in active discussions with John Tout and Jon Camp about the next
incarnation of Renaissance. Over the coming months, Northern Lights
will be kept up-to-date on progress, as plans and the band lineup are
settled.

The New Grove Project
Six years ago, Ingemar
Hjertqvist from Sweden (living in Switzerland now) made the album
“Fool’s Journey”. He recorded it with friends/musicians Roine Stolt,
Pär Lindh, André Schornoz, Per Sundbom and Jode Leigh from the
legendary band England. (“Garden Shed”).

Five years ago they planned a
second album but Jode Leigh unexpectedly became the victim of a
cerebral haemorrhage, because of which the new album “Brill” was
prosponed. Ingemar wanted Jode on that album, but the synchronisation
between his arms and legs has gone, so they had to look for an
alternative. For a while, it looked like Carl Palmer was going to do
the drums but after a few months he dropped out. Finally they found
Zoltan Csörz to record the drums but two weeks before the recordings
in the Crimsonic Studios he suddenly issued an ultimatum. He only
wanted to play the drums in a studio in Malmö. The costs were too high
so finally Hasse Bruniusson did the job. André Schornoz plays the bass
and Freddy from the band Thonk plays the guitars. Pär Lindh plays the
keyboards and does the production and Per Sundbom plays some extra
keyboards. A few titles: "Neonlight submission", "The light within"
and the 24' long titletrack "Brill". The album will be mixed and
mastered in december, so the new CD of The New Grove Project will hit
the shops beginning of 2003.

** RE-RELEASE DEBUT CD HEAVEN'S CRY **
During their short European tour (Heaven's Cry played at ProgPower and
a few gigs together with Threshold and the reactions were very
positive), we discussed a lot of things with the band about the future
between DVS and Heaven's Cry. It looks like both parties will go for a
longtime relationship, so far everything fits together perfectly. One
of the things we have decided is that DVS will re-release the debutCD
"Food For Thought Substitude" around June 2003. The band will re-mix
and re-master the whole stuff, new artwork will be made and we
probably will add 1 or 2 bonustracks to the album, to make it
different from the original release. Besides this DVS and Heaven's Cry
made already some plans for the third release from the band for early
2004. So this time we definitely do not have to wait another 6 years
(the time between the first 2 releases of the band)!

** ALIAS EYE ARE RECORDING THEIR SECOND CD **
German artrock band Alias Eye have started the recordings for their
second CD. According to the band they will experiment a little bit
during the recording sessions so we can definitely expect some huge
surprises. The album is scheduled to be released in Oktober 2003.

** PRE-PROMOTION CHROME SHIFT CD WILL START SOON **
In a few weeks we will start with the pre-promotion for our next
release, the debut CD by Danish progressive metal surprise Chrome
Shift. Metalized Magazine, the biggest metal magazine in Denmark, told
us that we can be very happy with this band, to them it is one of the
best Danish newcomers around. Solid progressive metal with and
excellent singer, that is what you can expect. Right now the album is
mixed and soon it will be mastered, Mattias Noren from Sweden will do
the artwork so once again expect a fine package. The album will be out
in Europe in February 2003, we are now negotiating some deals for the
rest of the world.

** WEBSITE UPDATED WITH AN ORDER PAGE **
We have updated the website a little bit with all the latest
information and news, including an order page. People will be able to
order the CDs directly though DVS from now on, we even added a page
where people can pay by credit card using PayPal. So check it
out!

HEEP at "Top Of The Pops", 1976 ) - "Still Payin' My Dues..."
(Lawton & Dunning at the Festival club, December 2001)

The other title is CARAVAN's "A
Knights' Tale", said to be recorded just ten days ago at the stage
of the Classic Rock Festival in Trenton, NJ. Founder members Pye
Hastings, Richard Coughlan and David Sinclair got violinist Geoff
Richardson back and introduced bassists Doug Boyle and Jim leverton
and percussionist Simon Bentall into the fold.
Tracklist:
1.The Dog He's At It Again - 2. Nine Feet Underground - 3. For
Richard - 4. Caravan Medley - 5. Who Do You Think You Are? - 6. Memory

The
Flower Kings
The Official Bootleg CD is now
available.

The CD was recorded at New York's Bottom Line club and is a mixture of
an audience recording and a soundboard recording. These two recordings
have been mixed by Roine and are, in his own words; 'slightly more
professional than the audience recordings that circulate.'
The recording was taken from
the 'late' set of the bands two performances on 14th April 2002 and
features the set highlight, a 50 minute rendition of 'Garden Of
Dreams'.
The album will only be available for a limited period and will not be
available in shops.
Track Listing
Garden Of Dreams (47:08) - In The Eyes
Of The World (6:30) - Bass & Drum Solos (4:16) - Circus Brimstone
