After Forever

After Forever introduces Joost van den Broek:

Joost van den Broek was born on the 13th of July 1982 which makes him 21 years old, almost 22. He has been playing keyboard for 11 years now. The last 4 years he studied at the conservatorium in Enschede ‘Musicproduction & Keyboards’.
Joost plays/played for a.o. Star One/Ayreon (
www.ayreon.com) , Sun Caged (www.suncaged.com), VandenBerg en ANAND (www.anandmahangoe.com) .
Thereby he has done several productions for various bands.
His major influences are: Derek Sherinian, Steve Vai, Ayreon/Star One, Muse, Jamiroquai & Devin Townsend.
Playing keyboards in a metalband is something Joost always enjoyed most, being a full part of a band, their sound and perfomance. One of the things he likes most is producing the fattest and weirdest sounds on his synthesizer and playing the keytar (shoulderkeyboard) !

Playing in After Forever gives him a lot of new opportunities musically as well as professionally.

Rush

Anthem/Atlantic recording group Rush has unveiled details of their upcoming new collection, dubbed “FEEDBACK.” This unique set sees the renowned trio – Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart – celebrating the band’s 30th anniversary by performing cover versions of eight rock classics from the Sixties. “FEEDBACK” is slated to arrive in stores on June 29.

“ FEEDBACK” marks the first time that Rush has recorded songs by other artists and writers. Included are such groundbreaking staples as Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” and “Mr. Soul,” the Yardbirds’ “Heart Full of Soul” and “Shapes of Things,” and the Who’s “The Seeker.” “FEEDBACK” also features versions of two songs which defined the heavy rock power trio tradition that gave birth to Rush – Cream’s explosive take on Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads” and Blue Cheer’s still-extreme rendition of Eddie Cochran’s “Summertime Blues.”

Track Listing of “FEEDBACK”
1. “Summertime Blues”
2. “Heart Full of Soul”
3. “The Seeker”
4. “For What It’s Worth”
5. “Shapes of Things”
6. “Mr. Soul”
7. “Crossroads”
8. “Seven and Seven Is”

Gentle Giant

Giant On The Box

Here's the latest information on the upcoming DVD from Alucard.

  • The DVD should "go to the factory" in mid-May 2004. It should be in stores by August 2004, and for sale on the web sometime earlier.
  • The title is "Giant on the Box". (As in "Box" = "Television")
  • Original, instrumental music by Kerry is played over the DVD menus, and it is GREAT! It is a fascinating melding of modern music and the GG compositional style.
  • If you want the track list to be a surprise, don't read any further. The DVD contains:
    1. 1974 concert from German TV station ZDF. Tracks include Cogs in Cogs, Proclamation, Funny Ways, The Runaway, Experience, Features from Octopus, Advent of Panurge, So Sincere. 50 minutes.
    2. 1975 US TV concert from the Terrace Theater, Long Beach, California. Tracks include Experience, Features from Octopus, Advent of Panurge, Funny Ways. 30 minutes
    3. Szene '74: a short bit of rare footage from the 1974 tour, filmed by German television station BRW. It's an excerpt from "In a Glass House" but you might not recognize it at first (I didn't): a blistering guitar jam based on some of the material from the second part ("Master inner voices..."). Sounds almost like heavy metal. 3 minutes
    4. Baroque & Roll: black & white footage and interview from Italian television. 22 minutes.
    5. Photo gallery from Gary's private collection. 36 photos

Tim Burness

Message from Tim:

My name is TIM BURNESS and I have a new album "FINDING NEW WAYS TO LOVE" out on my own Expanding Consciousness label in June. Musicians include drummer Fudge Smith (Pendragon and ex-Steve Hackett), Monty Oxy Moron on keyboards ( veteran punks The Damned) and Martin Franklin on electronics and percussion ( global ambient group Tuu).

The album is mostly "contemporary melodic rock" inspired by the likes of Peter Gabriel, Sting, Robert Fripp and Tears For Fears. Fans of "progressive rock" will recognize Steve Hackett and early Steve Hillage as other influences.

My "progressive rock" credentials include my early 1980s band Burnessence who supported I.Q., Pendragon and Pallas at that time. I have also played on albums by late nineties ambient group Tuu.

The MP3 single "Open Man" and other samples from the album are now available at

Lest

Progressive rock band  founded  in  Strasbourg in 1995, LEST walks in the footprints left by bands such as Pendragon, Marillion or IQ. In the early years, they open for Pendragon, Arena, Saga, Uli Jon Roth (ex-Scorpions). At that time, LEST is faced to many internal issues and the band splits for instability. In 1998, Didier Kopp is the last to stand and decides to search for new musicians to resurrect the band. He abandons his old songs  and starts working on a concept album project based on a futuristic love story. In 2000, with the arrival of Yannick Kirschhoffer closed followed by the Michel Gonçalves' coming , the concept album is finalized. In 2002, after a
series of singers and bass players coming and going,  Franck Le Bouvier and Pascal Rameix join the band. They both bring a particular touch to the concept album since Franck writes all song lines and Pascal gives a more dynamic style to their music. LEST is now more resolute and solid than ever and is patiently searching for a label to promote their newly recorded first album.

InsideOut News

Message from InsideOut

The moment has come. This week finally our long announced and lavishly prepared ARTWORK COLLECTORs SERIES is out in the shops. This format is something completely new for us und regarding this fact it was much more time needed for preparation than originally scheduled. Our supplier encountered a few problems with the manufacturing and so several copies of the numbers 0.001 to 3.000 could not be used. In order to reach the exact number of 3.000 copies, a few numbers had to be added. So please don't be confused when occasionally numbers over "3.000" turn up in the shops. In fact, there is a limitation to 3.000 copies worldwide for each title. So far are released:

TACS 001 SPOCKs BEARD The Light
TACS 002 PALLAS The Sentinel
TACS 003 ROINE STOLT The Flower King

Paatos - Kallocain
release on 07.06.2004

There’s also a special Edition in a Digipack with a bonus live DVD

The album’s title refers to a science fiction novel by Swedish female author Karin Boye. The story deals with a utopic society between Huxley and Orwell. Obvious traces were left by Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree: ”He was a gift of heaven”, says Stefan. ”He asked us if we could need help with the mixing. He exactly knew where we were heading. Wilson has, so to speak, added the gold powder to ‘Kallocain’.”

Arena Live Album

Verglas will be releasing a double live album made up of recordings from the Contagion tour. It seemed a waste not to do something with the various footage they had left over from so many excellent dates! The pressing will be strictly limited, and will also include a special 'collectors DVD' featuring an 'on stage and off stage' documentary about Arena on tour.
The release date will be in August.

More from the Verglas Rumour Mill

Here's some of the latest chunks of rumour and gossip floating around the halls of Verglas at the moment.
Remember, these are just rumours. We'll let you know when we find out more:

1. Verglas have agreed to finally release the third Strangers on a Train album. Plans are still on course to have the album recorded by the end of the year.

2. Writing continues on the sixth Arena studio album. We hear that one of the tracks has a working title of 'Opera Fanatica', and features some 'fairly extravegant instrumental work'.

3. The boys in Arena also have a title for the album, which they have promised to divulge very soon.

4. Arena may be releasing a series of 'past album' T-shirts. It may yet be possible to buy a 'Songs from the Lions Cage' shirt!
