Live 8

EMI has scored a coup over rival music companies by securing the DVD rights to this weekend’s Live 8 concerts after agreeing to pay several million pounds upfront to the event’s organisers, The Times has learnt.

The British music group won a hotly contested bidding war for the rights to release a DVD of the event by offering the organisers a generous cut of the profits and a large advance that will go towards paying for staging the concerts.

The worldwide event will feature a reunion of the group Pink Floyd as well as performances by artists including Coldplay, Madonna, Green Day, 50 Cent, Paul McCartney and U2. The concerts on Saturday will take place simultaneously in Hyde Park in London and cities including Philadelphia, Paris and Toronto.

The Live 8 DVD is expected to generate greater sales than the original Live Aid videos, which were published by Warner Music Group and sold more than a million units.

The more recently issued Live Aid DVD was so popular that WMG released a shortened highlights disc, profits from which are also split with the charity.

Live 8 is likely to be released on DVD in November and is expected to comprise at least two discs. Details such as price have yet to be set.

Bob Geldof, one of the event’s organisers, said: “I hope this will be the biggest selling DVD of all time. It deserves to be.”

Magic Pie

MAGIC PIE SIGNED TO PROGRESS RECORDS -

Magic Pie, Norwegian proggers who had immediate success, with their self released debut album "Motions of desire", has signed to the Swedish label Progress Records. The album was sold out very fast even though the sound quality was not top notch, so to make it even better the Progress version will be re-mastered and come with an enhanced booklet. The band, who by the way are booked for next years Rites Of Spring Festival, has a sound that appeals strongly to all fans of early Flower Kings or Spock's Beard with their timeless progressive rock which is highly  melodic but also quite complex at times. Add a pinch of the energy and attitude from mid 70's Deep Purple and you have a quite accurate description of how they sound. "Motions of desire" will be out on July 18, and they can be heard on stage at the progressive rock festival Slottskogen Goes Progressive in Gothenburg on August 13.

Release date July 18.

Pink Floyd

The event we have all been waiting for for years and years: Roger Waters reuniting with David Gilmour, Rick Wright and Nick Mason. The reunion will take place during the Live8 gig at Hyde Park, London, July 2.

According to The Times, Pink Floyd will play 4 songs, of which three will be coming form Dark Side Of The Moon. Large screens will be placed outside the fenced area in Hyde Park, so that unlucky fans can join the festivities as well. (source: www.thetimes.co.uk )

David Gilmour: "Like most people I want to do everything I can to persuade the G8 leaders to make huge commitments to the relief of poverty and increased aid to the third world. It's crazy that America gives such a paltry percentage of its GNP to the starving nations. Any squabbles Roger and the band have had in the past are so petty in this context, and if re-forming for this concert will help focus attention then it's got to be worthwhile." (source: www.pinkfloyd.com)

Roger Waters: "It's great to be asked to help Bob raise public awareness on the issues of third world debt and poverty. The cynics will scoff, screw 'em! Also, to be given the opportunity to put the band back together, even if it's only for a few numbers, is a big bonus." (source: www.yahoo.com)

Believe in August

The new album Believe is now finished and sounds really fantastic, [Nick B.: "I'll do a more indepth thing to post on the site soon"] and we are aiming for an August release, so hold onto yer hats, it's really happening people. At the moment we are piecing together videos and Hi 8 bits and bobs to make up a Progumentary DVD to go with a limited edition of the new album.
And...

SIMON WILLIAMS IS BACK!!!!!

Yep, it had to be. Simon has done another brilliant job of the cover, it's a lot more simple and harder edged but really great, a sneek preview is on the cards for the next update

A remastered Jewel

Release Date June 27th
Nick: ”Yes, well it was about time! Now let's be clear about this. Remastered is not the same as remixed! No, remastered means you cannot tinker with the actual mix itself, you cannot turn the guitar up [even tho I tried hee hee - Nick B]. What you can do however is add overall eq [treble bass] to the whole mix, and get rid of any nasty noise from the old analogue version and more than anything else, get a whole bunch more volume.

And the end result is...The Jewel now has a solid punchy performance with a good dollup more volume to the sound.

At last we have all the lyrics in the booklet too, and all round we reckon it's a really great new package

Ayreon

Arjen Lucassen as no one knew him: with his band project AYREON, usually appreciated for its fabluous mix of metal and bombast, folk, hard and progressive rock, on the new four track single “Come Back To Me” he offers two original “sound experiments“. Apart from “Come Back To Me”, a variation of the “The Human Equation” song “Day Seven: Hope” with a new title as well as the previously unreleased “August Fire” the single contains a “Come Back To Me” dance version (!) and also the very original Beatles cover “When I’m Sixty-Four” which was already recorded ten years ago. A video clip for “Come Back To Me” and a “Making of“ video complete the package. The first edition comes with a digipak and got a code with which one gets access to exclusive downloads on the Ayreon website until the end of September.

To match the tenth Ayreon anniversary InsideOut Music recently has completed the new edition of Ayeron’s five album backcatalogue.    www.arjenlucassen.com

Stream of Passion (Arjen Lucassen)

After Dutch guitarist/composer/producer Arjen Anthony Lucassen had finished his latest endeavour, the Ayreon rock opera The Human Equation, he wanted to do two things: showcase the many talents of Mexican singer Marcela Bovio, one of the vocalists on the Ayreon album, and form a band for the first time in 10 years.

The response of critics and fans to Marcela’s vocals on the Ayreon album was really great. People were simply blown away.” Arjen explains, “However, already when she was in my studio recording for the Ayreon project, I realized that she had many more talents that I regretted not being able to use at that time. So, hating to let a good thing go to waste, I decided to construct a project completely centered on her singing, composing and writing.”

To form the band, Lucassen used the Internet to tap into the numerous talents that reside all across the globe. A year ago, Dutch drummer Davy Mickers downloaded a special track from Lucassen’s website to enter a musicians contest, and used it to showcase his incredible drumming skills. And just recently Lucassen discovered Lori Linstruth, an amazingly skilled American female guitarist residing in Sweden, among the members of the online Ayreon Yahoo group. Completing the band are Mexican pianist Alejandro Millán and Dutch bass player Johan van Stratum from the Rock Academy in Tilburg.
