Pain Of Salvation
"BE" - the show
Before the next album "BE" is either recorded or released, die-hard
fans will be able to see the unique stage production of it be
performed during three intense weeks late August and early September
in the band's home town Eskilstuna, Sweden. Apart from the band there
will be nine orchestra musicians on stage, and Fredrik will play the
Grand Piano and the Harpsichord/Cembalo - they are talking the real
thing here; no synthesizers! They promise a very special experience
with music styles colliding, video projections and a very intriguing
concept revolving around the Story of Everything, gods and slaves...
"BE" - the album
The
"BE" project will also be Pain of Salvation's next album. It will be a
studio album and will be released spring 2004, which means that the
fans who really want to experience "BE" before that can come to any of
the shows in August/September. It might be the only time "BE" is ever
performed in original scale, and the POS event of a lifetime...

“BE” is about you, about the world that we all inhabit and the
patterns we all participate in. About the fact that the humans we
allow ourselves to become today will create the world that forms our
descendants tomorrow. It’s about you. It’s about us!
Unplugged album
On
the 12th of May this year, POS did a very special and much appreciated
unplugged show in Eskilstuna - with a lot of rearranged stuff; some
old songs were really dressed to kill for the occasion. This show was
recorded for the radio, and for a coming album! The release is
scheduled for the fall of 2003, which means that you won't have to
wait for next year for the next POS release! And for those of you who
think this is yet another unplugged album - think again; none of the
songs was left untouched...

Arena
Arena Tour Rumours
We have heard through the grape vine that Arena are set to appear in
Canada at the end of October. Dates still have to be finalised,
although we believe they will include appearances in Quebec and
Montreal, so keep an eye on the good old tour hotline for latest
information
www.verglas.com/ArenaWorld/arenaworld.html
Arena will also be back out on tour in Europe during early December.
They've promised to take the stage show out again, so don't miss it!
There are whispers in the air that they will be visiting Scandinavia,
Italy and even possibly Russia! Just keep checking that tour hotline,
and remember.... if it's not up there, it isn't official!
Arena's second EP - "Contagium"
As
the first of the special EPs ('Contagious') is about to go on general
release, work has begun on the second one. It seems that the format of
'Contagium' will be similar to its predecessor: There will be four new
tracks featuring at least two with vocals. We hear unconfirmed rumours
that Clive is in fact threatening to drag people off the streets to
provide another 'crowd', like the 'Floodgate Choir'. There will also
be another 'fun remix' from the main album. The front runner for this
is 'Salamander', but this, of course may change. There will also be
more multimedia extras, including another video clip, as well as more
photos.
Meanwhile, if you haven't got your copy of the first EP, 'Contagious'
yet, then you can always take a trip to the verglas store by simply
pressing this link:

Nolan and Barrett in concert!
Clive Nolan and Nick Barrett are teaming up for a two man show in
Chile and Argentina, later this year. It's something they've
threatened to do for a while, and now it seems it's really going to
happen!
The
actual concert dates are pretty much confirmed, with an evening at
'The House of Rock' in Santiago, Chile on Thursday September 25th, and
an appearance on Saturday September 27th in Buenos Aires, Argentina
(Venue not as yet named). Watch this space!
Fear not, Europe, because they have also just agreed to appear at the
Boerderij in Zoetermeer Holland as part of a co-headline with Ray
Wilson, on Sunday, September 21st. Clive said that the plan was always
to include music that doesn't usually get heard live at the moment,
like Shadowland, Strangers on a Train or Nolan&Wakeman, but there will
also be a good smattering of Arena and Pendragon as well as a few
'fun track's (knowing their love of Monty Python, we have a good idea
what they may be!).

Crimson II
This is a metal project from the band Edge of Sanity. Renowned Swedish
music Dan Swano has written a sequel to their acclaimed 'Crimson'
album, and Clive Nolan had written the lyrics. This was an unusual
departure for Clive, because he's never created lyrics without being
involved in the music: "It was a lot of fun, not having to consider
any musical restrictions. I'm looking forward to the result" said
Clive. Apparently, in exchange for the lyrics, Dan has agreed to
feature on the next Nolan & Wakeman album. Nice one!
The album will be out in August by the Black Mark label, and if you

The Nice
Last year heralded return of mighty THE NICE featuring original
members Keith Emerson, Brian Davidson and Lee Jackson, plus phenomenal
Dave Kilminster on guitar. Those who visited their unique shows though

Still, there's an opportunity to have a bite of experience with the
fresh album called "Vivacitas: Live At Glasgow 2002", a
three-CD set that has the band's classic pieces on the first disc, the
ELP material (sure, Emerson wouldn't have leave alive without this) on
the second, and a chat with a well-known rock scribe Chris Welch on
the third.

Plackband
Plackband has a new lead singer.
Starting August 1st, the symphonic rockband from The
Hague (Holland) has a new lead singer, Karel Messemaker.
The decision to change singer Kees Bik was a
coincidence. It looked as if the reunion of the legendary sympho band
from the seventies was finished. All targets since their reunion in
1999 were reached, great shows in Belgium, Holland and England. A
debute album (after 25 years), a single and a radio special. A last
gig on the progressive rock festival in Verviers in the Spirit of 66
(Belgium) on October 4 would end it.
But things went different...

Guitarist Ronald Brautigam and keyboard player Michel
van Wassem did a few acoustic gigs in Holland and Belgium with their
previous band November, with Karel Messemaker. This band released an
excellent CD in 1994 “The First Of November” and had a small hit with
the single ‘Memory”.
This led to the idea to start all over again with
November. The search for a drummer and a bass player resulted in
engaging their current band members from Plackband. So Plackband
decided to go on with Karel. Now they can choose from a wide
repertoire from Plackband, November and a few covers from Genesis.

Eric Woolfson
The
creator and writer of the Alan Parsons Project, ERIC WOOLFSON,
presents his first new concept album in thirteen years.

My
fascination with the world of Edgar Allan Poe
(1809-1849) began more than thirty years ago. It led to the creation
of the Alan Parsons Project and the first album ‘Tales Of Mystery And
Imagination – Edgar Allan Poe’ in 1976. At that time, I already had in
mind a volume two of ‘Tales’, but a change of record labels took the
APP in other directions.
Some years later, I decided it was time for me to revisit my hero,
Poe, or “Eddy” as his friends called him. The first result of this was
a stage musical and a concert version of ‘POE’ which tells the story
of his extraordinary life and works. I realized that half of the songs
in the musical contained the basis for a possible follow-up to ‘Tales’
and after preliminary work in my own studio, I went back into the
legendary Abbey Road Studios where ‘More Tales Of Mystery And
Imagination’ was completed.
During the recordings, I had the immense good fortune to be introduced
to Steve Balsamo. His remarkable voice lifted the tracks to a
level I had not previously experienced and I pay full tribute to him
and the many other talented and dedicated musicians, singers and
studio engineers without whom I could not have fulfilled my dream of
making a worthy follow up.
It
has taken over 6 years to make the album. The top session musicians
have been used including John Parricelli (played THE mandolin
in Captain Correlli’s Mandolin), Laurence Cottle (played with
Sting, Cher and Seal), Simon Chamberlain (played with Bjork,
Pet Shop Boys, Paul McCartney) and Ralph Salmins (played with
Madonna, Van Morrison, Mike Oldfield)
A
forty piece orchestra and 80 strong choir were used in the recordings

A
while back Roine Stolt was talking to Neal Morse (when he released his
Transatlantic demos CD) and said "hey, you know a lot of people have
somehow gotten a hold of my mixes of our 1st album on the internet.
Perhaps we should make it available officially" So, here it is!
Roine's mixes of Transatlantic's classic first CD SMPTe are lush and
rich (one might almost say flowery!) and full of things unheard on the
original version. They only pressed up a few and there won't be
another run for contractual reasons so, get 'em while you can.

Taboo
Three (ex) members of Darzamat from Poland have recorded a very
beautiful, experimental and psychedelic CD “Underaba”. They used the
name Taboo for their project. Comparisons are difficult, but the music
refers to Tiamat, Hawkwind and Porcupine Tree., with a wave gothic
edge. The band is still searching for a label to release ‘Underaba’.
If you’re interested you can mail to Rafal Goral at

Gary Hughes
A
Rock Opera written by Gary Hughes
Frontiers Records
finally announces all details concerning the hugely anticipated
release of the GARY HUGHES
rock opera “Once And Future
King” !
After the completion of Ten's
last album, the hugely acclaimed "Far
Beyond The World"; Gary has voluntarily closed doors
to all possible collaborations. His task was very ambitious: write a
rock opera in two chapters, based on the myths and legends of
King Arthur, the
legendary King of Britain.

Gary spent more than two years writing the lyrical textures and
finding the appropriate singers to play the various parts in this
majestic piece of work.
In the end he managed to compose a stellar cast formed by:
Damian Wilson
(Threshold, Ayreon) -
Prologue Narrator
Gary Hughes
– as King Arthur
Lana Lane -
as Guinevere
Danny Vaughn
(Tyketto) - as Lancelot
Irene Jansen
(Karma) - as Morgana
Bob Catley
(Magnum) - as Merlin
Sean Harris
(Diamond Head) - as Galahad
While, appearing on Chapter 2:
DC Cooper
(Symphorce) - as King Aelle
Sabine Edelsbacher
(Edenbridge) - as Nimue
Doogie White
(Rainbow, Yngwie Malmsteen) - as
Mordred
Harry Hess
(Harem Scarem) - Epilogue
Narrator
Gary also welcomed the input on keyboards on Mr. Ayreon himself,
Arjen Lucassen,
who played on the intro of the song "Excalibur" (off of the first
volume).
Musicians involved on the album include all
Gary Hughes'
Ten bandmates including the newest band member
Chris Francis on lead guitars,
John Halliwell on
guitars, Greg Morgan
on drums, Steve McKenna
on bass and Paul Hodson
on keyboards, with additional keyboards by
Graham Woodcock (The
Quest).

Cover artwork for both records have been designed by none other than
Chris Achilleos
(creator of Whitesnake’s “Lovehunter”
artwork).
The stunning final result is guaranteed to set in stone the talents of
Gary Hughes
as a songwriter and producer and shows the class and the immense
quality of British hard rock school, heir of the tradition of such
giants as Whitesnake,
Rainbow, UFO,
Magnum and
Thin Lizzy!
Frontiers Records
will release the first chapter of this immense piece of work on
August the 25th 2003.
The second chapter will be released separately, to respect the artist
will, on
October the 6th 2003.

Marillion
Well, the champagne corks are popping! (actually we just put the
kettle on) - the backing tracks are all recorded!
There was a time when I'd have said they were "on tape" but tapes
becoming a thing of the past. This CD is being recorded on to computer
hard-drives - the new "tape". We've spent the last 6 weeks revisiting
and tweaking (that's "final fine adjustments" for our overseas
readers) the arrangements of the songs then going for takes.
The drums are the most important thing at the backing-track stage of
recording, so the pressure's on, but Mosley The Cat has been in fine
form lately, and effortlessly rose to the occasion. We record as a
band, so although Dave's principally listening to the drums,
everyone's being recorded all the time so that if a good accident
happens, we capture it.
My main function at this stage is to provide guide vocals during the
takes so that the players know where they are in the song (bearing in
mind that we've probably altered the song structure numerous times
already!) and to work on melodies and words while I'm at it. We have
never had so much new music before. We have AT LEAST a double album in
the offing and more. The few people outside the band who've heard the
tracks have gone away buzzing, so we're all feeling pretty confident.
Dave Meegan will spend the next few weeks editing between the many
takes already recorded and choosing his favourite moments -
intentional and accidental - before calling us back in for overdubs.
The fun starts here..
