DVD RECORDING ZOETERMEER SATURDAY 7th SEPTEMBER

The DVD: the date for the recording of a gig for DVD release has been confirmed for Sat 7th Sept at Zoetermeer in the Netherlands. As we discovered in January, the venue's ideal for the purpose with a decent stage, a responsive audience, and a handy on-site bar for coping with post-gig adrenalin depletion!!! I'm sure those of you who make it along will help make it as special a night as possible. We hope to have one or two surprises, but if I told you what they were I'd have to kill you afterwards.

Putting a DVD together is a new experience for us, but we're excited by the possiblities the format offers. We're hoping to do it justice with a few extra features, the details of which again (I'm sad to say) are only available on a need to know basis (and you don't need to know - yet!)

The new album (working title "Not another F***ing concept album about orcs and hobbits?!"): This is also gradually looming on the horizon. The individual members of the band have been hunched over their guitars/keyboards/computers/digeridus accumulating the various ingredients that will make up our next opus. In my case this has been made a whole lot easier by the completion of the loft conversion that houses my home studio set-up. The result has been a steady flow of computer files and mini-discs between London and Aberdeen, the fruits of which you may one day get to hear. All I can say is that I'm wondering how we're going to fit a symphony orchestra into the Mill!!!”

Avantasia

"The long-awaited second part of the chart breaker "Avantasia" by mastermind TOBIAS SAMMET will be released in August 2002!"
After the celebrated release and the top chart positions of Tobias Sammet's "AVANTASIA - The Metal Opera Pt. 1" the second part of the All-Star-Project of EDGUY main man Tobias Sammet will be released in the second week of August this year. Let's see, if "Avantasia Pt.2" can de-throne "Avantasia Pt.1" as AFM Record's bestseller. The pre-album will continue at the point where "Avantasia Pt.1" finished. The final second part is characterized by atmospheric density and a stronger musical aspect without losing the typical Sammet trademarks.

Heaven’s Cry.

DVS Records:

“We are proud to send you the latest news about our upcoming album, the long awaited second album by Canadian progmetal act Heaven's Cry. Do you remember "Food For Thought Substitute" released back in 1996?? This album was voted as album of the month in several European metal magazines and ended on the 13th place in the annual album poll off Burrn! magazine in Japan. You probably forgot the band, but they will strike back this year!!

The new album, entitled "Primal Power Addiction", will see daylight in Europe in September, right before the Progpower festival where the band will have their first European gig ever. The new album will contain 10 brand new songs, in the same vein as the debut album "Food For Thought Substitute" but with a much more modern sound. If you liked the debut album you definitely will like this one. For those who do not know the band, let us surprise you in a very pleasant way.

For all American and Canadian people, the album will be officially released by MetalHertz in October, with distribution in Canada to the award winning distributor D.E.P. and in the USA through Sindrome / Warner. We are now negotiating details for official releases in other parts of the world for this album, we will keep you informed.

For more info and other excellent news check out the DVS website, like:

  • DVS licensed both Into Eternity albums to Century Media for release in Canada and USA
  • MetalHertz will also release Sonic Debris' debut album "Velvet Thorns" this fall in the USA and Canada

Xinema

UNICORN RECORDS is proud to announce the release of Swedish AOR-PROG band XINEMA with their first CD “Different Ways".  Xinema is a three piece prog/melodic rock band from Sweden, and has existed in its present form since March 99. Their music can be described as melodic emotional, well played and with a profound intention of making each song a working entity.  The band's motto is: “A good song is always a good song, regardless of genre."  Xinema takes great pride in their strong musical integrity, and has always done things their own way.  This gives at hand that there's no obvious choice when it comes to placing them a specific genre.  The guys themselves feel that they are standing with one leg in the melodic / AOR field and with the other in the progressive realm.   This release will please fans of SAGA, ASIA and the likes.

OSI

The highly anticipated project featuring guitarist Jim Matheos (Fates Warning), keyboardist Kevin Moore (Chroma Key, formerly of Dream Theater) and drummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Transatlantic) now has an official name OSI.
OSI will release its debut album, 'Orchestra of Strategic Influence,' in fall 2002 on InsideOut Music America. IOMA Managing Director Jim Pitulski expects this album to be one the label's biggest sellers to date.
Matheos, Moore and Portnoy are the core of the band, and Moore does most of the lead vocals, but 'Orchestra of Strategic Influence' will also feature special guest vocalists to be announced, and guest bass guitarist Sean Malone (Gordian Knot).
Recording of 'Orchestra of Strategic Influence' is taking place at Carriage House Studios in Connecticut with Grammy Award-winning engineer Phil Magnotti.
Jim finished recording guitars in his studio in New Hampshire, and Kevin started recording his keys, programming and vocals there on Tuesday, July 16th, 2002. Mixing and mastering should be completed by August 20th.
Listeners can expect to be surprised. According to Portnoy, musically speaking the album is "not Fates Warning, not Dream Theater and not Chroma Key."
A limited edition, multimedia version of 'Orchestra of Strategic Influence' will also be available and include concept videos from Moore as well as documentary footage.

Tony Kaye sues Yes.

Tony Kaye, the original keyboardist and a founding member of Yes, filed a lawsuit Tuesday (July 16) in a Los Angeles Superior Court, over unpaid royalties and music rights stemming from a band DVD and the forthcoming boxed set In A Word: Yes (1969- ), a five-CD collection scheduled for release on July 30.

Kaye, whose real name is Anthony Selvidge, accuses Warner Music Group, Warner Strategic Marketing, and the Warner Tamerlane and Warner Chapell music publishing companies with intentional and negligent misrepresentation, tortious interference with written contract, and breach of implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing.

In the lawsuit, Kaye states he left Yes in 1972 due to internal band issues and improper payment of royalties. In 1982, Kaye and other members of the band signed an exclusive artists recording agreement with Atlantic, a division of Warner Music Group.

Kaye charges that proper royalties were never paid over the years, despite a letter in 1999 to Warner Chappell requesting an adjustment. In addition, he states he was not properly consulted over a new boxed set of Yes material, though he claims 25 percent ownership of the band name, as well as publishing entitlements with regards to certain songs.

Mostly Autumn.

While the rest of the band (except Jon) played at a charity evening in aid of Ant Glynne, Rick Wakeman's guitarist, Bryan was in the States to visit the North East Art Rock Festival (or NEARfest for short) 2002, according to their own website, "the most prestigious progressive music festival in the world."
The annual festival took place at The War Memorial Theater in Trenton, New Jersey, just outside of Philadelphia. He was working as a photographer with the guys from Classic Rock Productions, who were taping Nektar and Caravan for a possible DVD release.
Recently there were rumours around, that Mostly Autumn will play NEARfest 2003, so please note that this is still a rumour...
Plans for next year are a new album in April and a tour to promote it in Late April/May !!! The probable title for the album is "Passengers". According to Bryan 6 songs are already finished, more in the works. Rumours are of a well known producer to be involved....

STARCASTLE

We are pleased to announce Starcastle's appearance at Progday 2002!!!

From Progday: American progressive rock masters STARCASTLE will be appearing at the ProgDay festival this Labor Day weekend, August 31st and September 1st, 2002. This performance is a culmination of a series of serendipitous events for all involved, as ProgDay found out that Starcastle might be available only after initial band commitments were made, but fate smiled kindly and the band was both available to play, and eager to get on stage in front of their fans after all these years.

Originating in Champaign Illinois, Starcastle was one of the popular and well-respected of the American prog bands of the 70s. Their first two albums for Epic, "Starcastle" and "Fountains of Light", are archetypes of the symphonic sound; utopian, grand, sweeping, intricate, complex and melodic, a marriage of accessibility and compositional rigor that holds up well to much of the contemporary music and what has come since.

After many years of inactivity, Starcastle is back. Gary Strater's Sunsinger Records has released the Starcastle archive "Chronos I", featuring material from the band's early days, and work is also underway for a new studio album. The long-awaited reunion of the band will be realized on the stage for the first time this Labor Day weekend. It is a privilege for ProgDay that this world-class band has accepted an invitation to perform.

For more info: http://www.starcastlemusic.com

Tickets are already on sale for ProgDay, a two-day festival taking place on the Labor Day weekend, August 31-September 1 2002, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, NC. Already confirmed for the event are Happy the Man, The Muffins, Avant Garden (all US), Kraan (Germany), Tempano (Venezuela) and Thieves' Kitchen (UK).

Phil Collins.

Phil Collins has put the finishing touches to a new solo album. "Testify" should be available by 12th November and has taken almost six years in the making. It is the first new material by the 51-year-old ex-drummer and singer of Genesis since the soundtrack for the Disney vehicle "Tarzan" (1999). Following the immense success of the single "You'll Be in My Heart", Collins not only scored an Oscar, but also a Golden Globe and a Grammy award for his contribution to the soundtrack. Collins remarried in 1999 and has become a father again last year, two feats which obviously stimulated his creativity. "The songs for this album have been written over a period of two years. Thanks to new games and tools, the songs practically wrote themselves. It led to some of my best songs ever", Collins proudly announces. Last month, Phil Collins took up the drumsticks for a rare performance on the grounds of Buckingham Palace for the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

SOFTWARE

New album "ABRAKADABRA"
Coming on Universal Records Japan in October 2002 and in January 2003 in the rest of the world
An exclusive MoonJune production
We are the New Software for the Classic Machine!
ALLAN HOLDSWORTH electric guitar
ELTON DEAN alto sax, saxello, Fender Rhodes
HUGH HOPPER electric bass
JOHN MARSHALL drums

In September of 1999, Software debuted at a festival in Augustusburg, Germany. The band ‹ Hugh Hopper (bass), John Marshall (drums), Elton Dean (alto sax and saxello),  Keith Tippett (piano) ‹ presented a mosaic of glittering Soft riffs, fuzzy hues and blues and a percussive lyricism that crackled like a snapping whip. They blew life into the still smouldering members of early 70's progressive music. They rocked, they grooved, but mostly they made a glorious noise.
This one-off performance continued to resonate. Along the Canterbury trail interest was on the rise. And thus 2002 heralds the arrival of a brand new Software for a classic machine. Hugh, Elton, and John are now joined by the equally iconoclastic Allan Holdsworth on guitar.

Also the band will be on tour through Europe this summer. They will play in Norway, France, Belgium, Germany and Spain. At those concerts the band will perform besides songs from their 3 studio albums, also new material from the next album. For the first time ever they will perform their song "A Dance of Shadows" from the second album "Ex Tenebris".

SIGNIFICANCE
The artwork and CD's have gone to the printers and pressing plants respectively and hopefully the new CD complete with 16-page booklet will be available for purchase in 2 weeks time. The tracks have been re-mastered by Michael Woolf and myself and as long as things go well in production I'm hoping we will all be happy with the results.
Orders are now being taken for the CD. Those who have purchased the original demo CD and wish to swap can do so by sending the CD back to the PO Box address. New orders can be taken either by sending cheques to the PO Box or by credit card via e-mail. The price is the princely sum of £12 which for 54 minutes of music and a small book isn't bad:-)

The John Young Band will feature John Mitchell (Arena) guitar and vox, John Jowitt (IQ) bass and vox and Steve Christey (Jadis) drums. We hope to book gigs from September onwards and the set will be a mixture of my solo stuff and progressive tunes from my new prog CD which has the working title of 'Unknown Soldier'. It will feature a collection of mini epics including the much loved 'Childhood's End and Kings' and will be a band based CD.

Spock's Beard
Cover-art for the new Spock's Beard "Snow"

Star One/Ayreon

Big Stage
I feel that the Space Metal album screams out to be played live, which was the reason to do this tour in the first place, so we will play more than half this album. Of course I will also 'cover' many Ayreon songs (at least one song from every album) and adapt them for a live-setting. The emphasis will be on the heavier material, although there will also be some acoustic, folky, proggy and electronic passages. So the band will be called "Star One featuring Ayreon". The motto of the tour will be "Intergalactic Space Crusaders". And although my original plan was not to do a big stage set-up, we are busy setting up a great spaceship-like stage with some additional special effects!
No supportband
We also decided to play without a supportband. We were talking with Vanden Plas, but we both agreed that the technical facilities and their freedom of movement on our stage would be too limited to properly present themselves and their excellent latest album Beyond Daylight to the audience. It's a shame, because I'm really impressed with this album, great production, brilliant musicianship and good songs.

John Entwistle

A big loss for the music world. John Entwistle, the bass-player of The Who passed away. Tthis is a text I found on the Sonus Umbra website. I couldn’t have said it better.
A tribute by Luis Nasser of Sonus Umbra to John Entwistle
Love is a heart attack...
By now almost anyone who has an interest in rock music will have heard that John Entwistle has passed away.
I cannot exaggerate how important his style and bass playing have been to me as a musician; at least 90% of everything I have ever played on bass has been the result of me asking myself "what would Entwistle do here?", and then playing something much lesser.
I can't hope to express my feelings about his passing. All I can say is that I can't stop wishing he died with a smile on his face, during the fuck of a lifetime, and that whoever was servicing him at the time will have enough intelligence and compassion to tattoo this simple eulogy over her snatch:
"It Wasn't A Trick Of The Light".
Of all the so called "stars" I have met in person, he was the only one who wasn't a linear combination of flake, poser, asshole & primadonna.
He was a blue collar virtuoso of wry wit and lethal fretboard hocus pocus, who brought the cacophony of the Who sharply into focus.
He was what many call a "rock star", as big as they come, who indulged himself with the voracious gluttony of the "rock star", yet never forgot what it was like to be a fan.
Personally, I refuse to call him a star, for no other reason that to me, rock "stars" are self-indulgent buffoons who do little more than cast the light of their own inadequacy and greed on their fans.
He was a balls-to-the-wall musical innovator, and his sonic legacy will continue to inspire loud, tasteful fretboard wanderlust.
After all, guitarists need to be reminded of their real place along the food chain.
Raise a glass, crank Quadrophenia to 11, and if the tears must flow, let them flow inwards!
We owe him at least that much...
Luis

Thieves’ Kitchen

A statement by the band:
Due to the somewhat more eclectic and open-minded approach to progressive rock in foreign climes, most notably the USA, it is clear that a great deal of the band's efforts will continue to focus on promotion and live work abroad. This will unfortunately prove impossible for our vocalist Simon Boys, who already has a young family with a third baby on the way this Autumn. It is thus with regret that we have mutually agreed to part company.
This second change of personnel in the band also entails a change of gender, as we welcome on board the remarkable Amy Darby Amy.
The transition has been seamless, and the band will appear as planned at Prog Day '02 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on August 31st 2002. We very much look forward to seeing you there to welcome our new member to the Thieves' Kitchen fold!

Henry Fool

Tim, Stephen and Peter have been in the studio working on two new tracks, one of which should appear on a forthcoming Cyclops sampler (no details as yet.) The band have also begun rehearsing for an appearance at the Whitchurch Festival, UK on Sunday August 4th, where they will be playing an hour long set before headline act Focus. They have been joined for rehearsals by drummer Richard Osbourne, who is standing in for Fudge. Myke Clifford will also be unavailable due to his compering duties at the Cambridge Folk Festival.
Formed in the Spring of 2000, Henry Fool is an eclectic new band including amongst its ranks, the unlikely pairing of Pendragon drummer Fudge Smith and Tim Bowness from No-Man (guitar and vocals). Also comprising Stephen Bennett (LaHost) on keyboards and Samuel Smiles alumni, Peter Chilvers (bass), Michael Bearpark (additional guitar) and Myke Clifford (woodwind), the band released its debut album (the eponymously titled 'Henry Fool') through UK Progressive label Cyclops in October 2001. Creating a distinctive combination of 60's/70's Progressive influences (Gabriel era Genesis/Pink Floyd/Soft Machine), contemporary textural experiments (Rain Tree Crow/Labradford) and hard-hitting group improvisations (King Crimson/Radiohead), Henry Fool have created one of t he most original and emotive Progressive sounds of the last decade.
Fudge (Pendragon)

Flower Kings

The recording of the new DOUBLE CD is going VERY well. Jonas describes it as the symphonic side of Stardust We Are X 3!!! Also very 'organic' which has been helped by all the band meeting and recording it together in a new studio (before the albums were usually made by the band exchanging master tapes between their own 'home' studios.
Jonas new Karma Kanic' album still on for a September release

Focus

Published in July by rock and pop book specialist SAF Publishing, "In And Out Of Focus - the music of Jan Akkerman and Focus" charts the rise and demise of the classic Focus line-up as well as an in-depth appraisal of the band's enigmatic guitarist...Jan Akkerman
