Änglagård in the Spirit Of 66
As
you probably already know, Änglagård is back on the road. Don’t miss
this opportunity. The gig on Monday August 25th in the
Spirit Of 66 in Verviers (Belgium) is exclusive for the Benelux. They
will be on stage with no less than 3 mellotrons.
Änglagård were founded in 1991 in Stockholm and they disbanded in 1994
after their final performance at the Progfest in Los Angeles. During
that time they released two albums which are considered to be classics
in the realm of original Scandinavian rock music.
2002 saw the band revitalized and rehearsing again. Now 2003 promises
to become the year of Änglagård with concerts in the US and in Europe,
and maybe also a new studio album. Before I try (and fail) to describe
their music you better listen to it and judge for yourself. In the
sounds-section
you can find various sound samples. The
history-section
contains details about the band's career and its members.

This is Neal’s first outing since his departure from SPOCK’S BEARD and
the renowned ‘supergroup’ TRANSATLANTIC, and what an outing it is!
Testimony is a 2 CD set with more than 2 hours of music from the mind
behind some of the best prog of the last ten years. Neal has
apparently pulled out all the stops employing members of the NASHVILLE
SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, as well as fellow Transatlantian MIKE PORTNOY, and
some new guests like KERRY LIVGREN of Kansas.
Testimony will be available in a regular 2 CD jewel case version as
well as a Limited Edition version. It wouldn’t be prog if we didn’t
have a limited edition! The LE will include a bonus disc with Neal and
Mike doing a 13 minute rendition of “Tuesday Afternoon” by the Moody
Blues and “Can’t Find My Way Home” by Blind Faith. Also, included is
an extra booklet titled “Testimony Notes” with Neal’s notes and
recollections about each track. The Limited Edition comes in a box
similar to the SNOW box.
The first hundred Limited Edition pre-orders will be signed by Neal.

PRESSURE POINTS DVD:
At long last, PRESSURE POINTS is available on DVD! This accomplishment
has taken many months of negotiation, through many channels, and the
outcome is now in stock! This1984 video has been sought after for
years. The special terms and conditions which allow us to release this
special recording are that it is must remain in its original recorded
state, exactly as was released previously on VHS cassette. For this
reason, CP has priced the DVD at $20. They continue to have high hopes
that the original tapes can be located, despite having been informed
many years ago that they were deleted from the archives in 1985.
Stranger things have happened but we make no promises or inferences
that any bonus footage can be found. For now, Recorded at the
Hammersmith Odeon in London, England on the 11th of April 1984,
PRESSURE POINTS has nearly 80 minutes of footage which includes guest
performances from Mel Collins (sax) and the late Peter Bardens
(keyboards).

SPECIAL OFFER: IF you order all three Camel DVDs (Coming of Age,
Curriculum Vitae and Pressure Points), they’ll apply a 10% discount.
GODS OF LIGHT: During the recording session with Andrew Latimer, Andy
Ward and Doug Ferguson, the lads were gracious enough to take time out
to autograph 50 copies each of 'Gods of Light' and 'Camel on the Road
1972'. There is no price increase for this special souvenir, but they
are in limited supply so it is a first-come, first-served basis.

The Tangent
"The Music
That Died Alone"- released Sept 22 on Inside Out records
"The Tangent" is a musical project that involves seven of the most
dedicated progressive musicians of today. Taken primarily from two of
today's most prolific progressive bands (The Flower Kings and Parallel
or 90 Degrees), that core is augmented by the legendary Van Der Graaf
Generator saxophonist David Jackson, and the up and coming solo artist
Guy Manning. A line-up that historically spans the whole of the
progressive music era then. "The Music That Died Alone" is a CD
recorded by the people of that project.

There will be a few of you who wonder what an album made by a
concoction of Flower Kings & Po90 members sounds like... after all,
the bands are pretty different from each other. Po90 operate at the
darker end of the progressive spectrum, and have as such frequently
been compared to Van Der Graaf Generator, which makes this
collaboration with David Jackson all the more poignant.
If anyone were to be said to be carrying forward Yes' torch of
optimism and light, it would be the Flower Kings, with their joyous
up-beat slant on the world. Just look at the titles of the songs,
Po90's "Dead On A Car Park Floor" against the FKs "Stardust We Are"...
or perhaps album titles.. "More Exotic Ways To Die" versus "Flower
Power".
The
Tangent seeks to be able to combine these views to avoid an
unnecessary polarization in the forces of progressive music. After
all, Po90 maintain that they are, (regardless of the titles) a very
positive band. ATD has frequently gone on record as such. Back in
progressive music's first heyday, there was another outfit where
musicians from both sides of the form could work, this being King
Crimson, which despite its frequently dark approach to "prog" found
room for Jon Anderson's uniquely optimistic and angelic voice.

The
Music that Died Alone is a remarkable album. For a start, it's a lot
shorter than everyone expected given the scale of recent Spock’s
Beard, Transatlantic & Flower Kings records. It clocks in at just
under 50 minutes. It's made up of four pieces (or movements.. Andy
jokes that this being a prog record, "it should have movements!")

Trisomy
On
Saturday October 4th, Trisomy present their CD
“Entanglement”.
The
CD presentation itself is held at De Plato, Molenstraat 123, Helmond.
At the CD presentation, a couple of guests will play: Sylver Myst,
Annatar, Her Enchantment and Whispering Gallery. The evening starts
with two bands playing, followed by the CD presentation itself and
ends with again two bands playing. The schedule will be available in
time on the website
http://www.Trisomy.nl.
For clubinfo and roadmap:
www.plato.helmondweb.nl

Trisomy was founded in 1996 and consists of 5 members. After some
changes in line-up finally the Trisomy sound grew mature. Since no
existing style covers the sound exhaustively we decided to describe
the sound in the way the music is experienced: as an "Emotional
Rollercoaster".
At
the end of 2002 everything was set to roll out a plan to put Trisomy
in the spotlights. About 15 concerts at venues and festivals
throughout The Netherlands followed in the first half year of 2003 to
get the public acquainted with Trisomy. Also Trisomy recorded the mini
CD called "Entanglement".
After having closed the first line of concerts with the Summer
Darkness Festival (Paradise Lost, Autumn, After Forever, Orphanage,
Epica, a.o.), everything is set to launch the new CD. This launch will
also be the kick-off of the Entanglement tour through The Netherlands
consisting of about 25 concerts from October to December.

Transmission
The
German band Transmission, formed by Thorsten Koenig and Juan Roos,
devote themselves to the 80s and 90s progressive metal, established by
bands like Fates Warning, Watchtower or Dream Theater. They got two ex
CHAIN members in their band, Stephan Kernbach and Christian Becker
Transmission's music can be described as experimental, but however
isn't overloaded and without direction. Their songs are made of catchy
melodies, enjoying playing and a lot of power.
Nevertheless the band doesn’t only do their self written songs. There
is also a selection of all time metal favourites like for example 'Eye
Of A Stranger' by Queensryche or current hits like 'Strange Deja Vu'
by Dream Theater they play live!
Their professional presentation is a result of each member's long-time
stage experience!

Day Of Dreams festival
The Day of Dreams festival in Holland has been officially cancelled.
There’s no alternative as they first announced on Saturday December 6.
Because there’s no Steve Hogarth (a second booking previous to Day of
Dreams, without the knowledge and approval of the festival), one of
the main guests of the festival has disappeared. So we can’t give
enough quality to go on with the show.
The organisation of Day of Dreams is sorry that it all went this way,
but the public is the more important.

Neal Morse
The Neal Morse website is up and running,
www.nealmorse.com
You
may know him as the primary writer and vocalist for the progressive
rock band
Spock's Beard.
Or maybe you know him as the main writer/vocalist/keyboardist for the
"Supergroup"
Transatlantic
(comprised of members from
Dream Theater,
The Flower Kings
and
Marillion).
But with Testimony, Neal Morse has finally stepped into his own as a
solo artist, letting all his styles converge, going way beyond the
work of his first two, pop-oriented solo outings. Displaying a vast
array of talents, Neal not only writes all the material and plays the
majority of instruments on this album, but he also produces and
arranges them as well.

This is the record that took his whole life to make. In doing so he
pulled out all the musical stops, so to speak. There are strings
(arranged and conducted by Chris Carmichael), horns, a choir, and even
a pedal steel guitar. Drumming duties are handled mightily by long
time friend and fellow Transatlantian Mike Portnoy, and there's even a
guest appearance by Kansas' founding member, Kerry Livgren. And for
continuity, Rich Mouser (V, Snow) is at the controls, mixing and
mastering the double CD.
When asked if this album is progressive in the vein of Spock's Beard
and Transatlantic, Morse responded "Most definitely! I mean, it's
inevitable that some 'Spocksy' sounding passages made it in, but I
really tried to take this to a different place. It is VERY, VERY prog.
Let's just say that if you liked my work in those 2 bands, you will
most likely LOVE this."

Steve Hackett
Steve will be travelling to Japan towards the end of August to
participate in the Guitar Wars event. This is being presented in Tokyo
and Osaka by Universal Music (Steve's label in Japan) and Udo Artists
(Japan's leading promoter) in conjunction with Hard Rock Cafe's 20th
anniversary in Japan. Other confirmed participants to date are Paul
Gilbert and Nuno Bettencourt with the possibility of one more
guitarist yet to be announced. The band will consist of Roger King on
keyboards with King Crimson's Pat Mastelotto on drums and Mike Szuter
of The Szuters on bass. Should prove to be an interesting evening!
There are mutterings too about filming the whole shooting match so who
knows what may eventually emerge.

Morning
Dreammetal… Imagine a mix from atmospheric pop, progressive rock and
heavy fantasy metal, that’s a short description of the music Morning
makes…
Morning was founded in the summer of 2000 by Saskia van Heugten
(vocals) and drummer Mauro Pi (drums). In autumn 2000 the
brothers Pol Bannier (bassguitar) and Stijn Bannier
(synths) joined the band. Until summer 2003, the band released two
demo-EP’s. In February 2001 they released "Little Moves", with Jerry
Jacobs on guitar. This demo-cd caused, apart from Morning becoming
more known, a lot of gigging in the Netherlands and abroad in 2002 and
2003, now with Gilles van Hoof as the guitarist. With this line-up
Morning also released the mini-cd "Circle of Power" in April 2002,
which was reviewed very positively in several magazines. The cd was
recorded by Hans Reinders (Boondoggle) in the Pitstudio (Sun Caged,
Banner of Thugs, Desensitised, Triple 7) in Weert, The Netherlands and
it was mastered by Marcel Coenen (ex-Lemur Voice, Sun Caged).
After working for two years with just one guitarist, the Dutch band
(with members from Susteren, Nieuwstadt, Sittard and Heerlen) decided
in summer 2002 to continue with two guitarists. The remaining members
found Martijn Brauwers and Bas Rensen. The young band
(ages between 15 and 26) calls its style dreammetal, with influences
from bands like The Gathering, Ayreon, Rhapsody and Lacuna Coil. With
the new line-up the band is more powerful and intense like never
before and gets a decent name in live performing with provisional
zeniths like:
• playing at several festivals (a.o. Jamrock, Bevrijdingsfestival);
• playing in venues like Fenix – Sittard, Tagrijn – Hilversum, Hanehof
– Geleen, ... ;
• playing abroad in places like Brussels, Namur and Liège;
• playing together with (metal)bands like After Forever, Autumn,
Epica, Callenish Circle and Sengir and also with more pop/rock
orientated bands like Blöf, Di-rect and Brainpower;
• winning the regional preliminary round from the MetalBattle 2003.
In May and June 2003 the band started working on a new demo-EP called
"Inside". This cd is recorded by Hans Reinders in the Pitstudio again.
"Inside"
was released in August 2003.

Unsung Heroes of Rock Guitar
Unsung Heroes of Rock Guitar
is a collection of in-depth Q&A interviews with fifteen of rock
music's most underrated guitarists, many of whom have been very
successful as members of popular music groups, but whose music is more
recognizable than their individual names and faces.
Featured players are
Mick Abrahams
(Jethro Tull, Blodwyn Pig),
Randy Bachman
(Guess Who, Bachman Turner Overdrive),
Martin Barre
(Jethro Tull),
Craig Chaquico
(Jefferson Starship),
Larry Crane
(John Cougar Mellencamp),
Rik Emmett

Bruce Kulick

Howard Leese
(Heart),
Doug Marks
(Metal Method),
Trevor Rabin
(Yes),
Stephen Rothery
(Marillion),
Ty Tabor
(King's
X), and
Richard Williams
(Kansas).
"It's been quite an eye-opening experience, researching and writing
this book," says author Sterling Whitaker. "People tend to
think of rock stars as being rich and famous and living happily ever
after on their royalties, but that's rarely ever the case. Many of my
interview subjects had horror stories about getting ripped off by
managers, record companies, and even their own band members. Hardly
anyone walks away with the kind of money you might imagine."
A guitarist himself, Whitaker feels that his experiences and
struggles in trying to build a career in music have given him a
special insight into his subjects. "This book gave me an excuse to
call up a bunch of players whose work I like and ask them the
questions I've always wanted to know," he says. "If it brings people
to a better understanding of them and their music, then that's my
reward. Well, that and the money!"

Fish
Fish had a few starting problems with his new album, like an energy
company that failed to work.
He also didn’t want to let his broken relation have an effect on the
album. But finally the inspiration came for "Field of Crows". It seems
to become some sort of a concept album. 9 tracks are in different
state of progress.
The
written songs are (in the same order as on the album): "The Field"
(atmospheric changing into Celtic Rock), "Rookie" (straight rock with
brass instruments), "Moving Targets" (rock around a strong rhythm
guitar riff), "Zoo Class" (swinging), "Numbers" (straight rock), "Exit
Wound" (bluesy ballad with Lennon influences), "Old Crow" (rocky,
swinging, danceable !?), "Innocent party" (The Who-ish epic) and "Shot
the Craw" (spacy, folky, female?). A few tracks are still in the
writing process: “The Lost Plot" (Floyd epic) and "Scattering Crows"
(accelerating rhythm upto heavy rock) which will eventually change
into "The Field" revisited. During the coming weeks, everything will
find its place and a few MP3’s will be placed on
www.fieldofcrows.com.
There’s also some bad news. Jim Drummond has left the band. His work
for others and some cancellations of Fish gigs, made it difficult to
spend enough time together to accomplish something good. The pieces
that were ready weren’t good enough for the album. After Fish had
spoken about this with Jim, he admitted that he had difficulties with
the material. They decided to search someone else. It’s obvious that
Jim won’t do any more live gigs with Fish. His last gig with the band
will be the festival in Knockhill.
You won’t like that news (every one will agree that Jim is a wonderful
person), but his replacement is good too. Mark Brzezicki will take his
place. He already played on Vigil en you could hear him on "Pigpen's
Birthday". It’s possible that Mark will join the upcoming tour. Fish
agrees that his technique and energy is what he was looking for.
There is also some news from the acting front. Fish did a few
auditions. The movie "Nine Dead Gay Guys" will be released on
September 19 and this movie should help him to healthen his acting
carreer.
During the coming months, you can expect more dates for England and
Europe. South America is also still on the agenda.
Even more bad news, after Jim Drummond, Irvin Duguid has also left the
band. The reason is the personal effect of Jim’s leaving the band and
also his disagreement with this. Fish had no comment but says he’s
very angry about what’s happening. Irvin will also play his last gig
on Knockhill.

DEEP PURPLE/URIAH HEEP Super group
DEEP PURPLE/URIAH HEEP Super group To Begin Mixing Debut Album -
Aug.11, 2003
The
new super group featuring members of URIAH HEEP, DEEP PURPLE and OZZY
OSBOURNE's former bass player Bob Daisley is putting the finishing
touches on its debut album, tentatively due in late 2003/early 2004
through an as-yet-undisclosed label.
The
as-yet-unnamed band, which consists of Daisley, Lee Kerslake (URIAH
HEEP) on drums, Jon Lord (DEEP PURPLE) and Don Airey (OZZY OSBOURNE,
BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW) on keyboards, Steve Morse (DEEP PURPLE) on
guitar, and Jimmy Barnes (COLD CHISEL) on vocals, has finished
recording the CD and will complete the mixing process within a month.
"There are five new original songs written by Steve, Jimmy, Lee and
Bob together and they fit right in with the old classics," reads a
post on
Daisley's web site. "The total recording took just 15 days,
which in this day and age seems like a miracle. Rumour even has it
that maybe some old OZZY OSBOURNE band songs have been re-recorded at
the same time."

Sanity
Sanity performs on stage for free
After three years of preparation, the time has come to get Sanity on
stage full-time. In order to give everyone the chance to get familiar
with the music of Sanity, the progressive rock band from Leerdam, The
Netherlands will be available during a limited time period for free
gigs in The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Stages that are
interested in a free gig of Sanity may submit themselves by filling up
the contact form on
www.sanity.nl
Sanity was founded in 1999 during the finals of the pop competition
‘Parel van de Betuwe’ by some ex-Blind Fury members and the former
singer of Bagheera, Kees van Keulen. In the years to follow they were
a regular appearance in these finals. The reactions of the press and
the audience are very positive.

Sanity creates (without hodgepodge) symphonic rock with a metal touch.
Emotion plays a great part in the self-written songs. Fierce up-tempo
pieces, sensitive parts and floatingly conducted excesses take turns
without trouble. The lyrics deal with subjects like happiness and
sorrow, but also other aspects of the human (emotional) life.
Autobiographic elements are not absent in these songs.
Performances of Sanity are very intensive and driven and the show
element is certainly not forgotten.

Marillion
After much deliberation, we have finally decided on a name for the new
Marillion album - it's going to be called MARBLES. And it’s a double
album! Yes, that's right, a full 2CDs of new music.

Shortly, we will be putting the new album on sale for pre-order from
our website. For every copy of Marbles that is pre-ordered, profits
from that sale will go into our Campaign Fund. Using this money, we
will take out adverts in magazines that we know our fans read,
advertise on radio stations that we know our fans listen to - in
short, try to reach all the people who don't necessarily visit our
website or receive our eWeb, and potentially reach NEW fans too!
Radio advertising is a very important medium for us, as we are sure
you will agree - if people can hear our music then they generally love
it. As radio stations will not play Marillion songs (politics and
playlist restrictions - DJ's have told us they're not ALLOWED to play
our new music!), then this seems an obvious route for us. The Campaign
Fund will allow us to take control of our marketing and destiny.
As
of 1st September 2003 MARBLES will be on sale for pre-order only
through Racket Records at
http://www.marillion.com
The
MARBLES "Special Edition" package will be on sale through Racket
Records at the special pre-order price of 27.99 UK Pounds. If you
purchase this Special Edition before 31st December 2003 you will be
directly helping our Campaign, and as a "Thank You" will we print your
name in the album credits, AND ship the album to you at least a month
before the currently planned release date of 26th April 2004.
Remember, this is a Double Album - 2 full CDs of new Marillion music!
As
of 1st January 2004 onwards you will still be able to buy the double
album, but your name will not be in the credits and it will not be
shipped to you until the release date; but it will still be the
"Special Edition" packaging.
For
those of you who want all the music but don't want to pre-order and
take part in the campaign, we plan to release the full double album in
a standard CD box from the release date of 26th April 2004.
The
current planned release date for MARBLES is 26th April 2004. From this
date, there will be a 1CD version of the album for sale in retail
shops around the world. When this has gone on sale in the shops, we
will also be selling this via our website. The full 2CD double album
will NOT be available in retail shops.
A
major tour will begin end of April 2004, and we will hopefully start
announcing dates early this Autumn.
