Sun Caged.

This week, Sun Caged signed a record deal with Bee & Bee Records (http://www.distribee.com) from The Netherlands.
The band are very happy to finally be able to record a full-length album. Several labels showed interest but the communication with Bee & Bee was very pleasant. The recordings of the debut cd are scheduled for early 2003. No details are  available about what studio and producer the band will work with, but Bee & Bee and Sun Caged are in contact with several studios and producers at the moment.
The debut cd will feature almost all the songs of all three demo-cd's, plus two new songs. The songs from the first two demo-cd's will be equipped with new vocal melodies and lyrics.

The Gathering

The Gathering EP ‘Black Light District’ retail release in Benelux on September 16th.
SUBURBAN/BERTUS is responsible for distribution.

A word from the band:

Dear all,
I am a happy person to tell you all we are in a mixing phase of the new album. We're all relieved and satisfied, as it turned out excellent.
Right now we've streamlined the album into a 10 track full length, a mere 50 minutes of music.
Those 10 tracks work with each other; they are making all individual songs even stronger. The detailing and giving the songs the right balance/mix was sometimes a harsh and cruel process throwing away mixes of 3 days work. It's painful, spending so much time on details, which in the end we did not use at all. Kill your darlings. But it's the only way. Thanks to Zlaya who worked like a horse, staying alert, focussed and awake, always-trying new ideas, and slave driving the band members till the bitter end.
We still have some work left, we need to master after the mixing process is done, but we are getting a clearer picture day by day.
We have done a track called 'A life all mine' with Trickster G (Ulver) singing and it turned out totally amazing.
Other track titles are: 'Even the spirits are afraid', 'Broken Glass', 'We just stopped breathing', 'Golden Grounds', 'Jelena', 'You learn about it', 'Souvenirs', and some other tracks which don't have titles yet.
Some ideas we've thrown away, some tracks will pop up in a different shape. Somewhere in autumn we will try to put an mp3 file of a song online. Damn curious how you people will react on this new CD, as it is quite intense, dark and gloomy. Release date is around half of January 2003. – Hans Rutten

DVS Records

* DVS Records signs Chrome Shift from Denmark!

We are proud to announce a new band that joins us, Danish band Chrome Shift. The band recently signed a management deal with Intromental Management and now has signed a worldwide deal with us for the release of their debut album early 2003. More about this when we are closer to the release date.

* Preview Heaven's Cry album

Well, the promotion for the Heaven's Cry CD "Primal Power Addiction" will start now in Europe, the promo copies just arrived and the result is great! We are not sure when the album will be officially out in the USA, we are waiting for the announcement from our partner MetalHertz. Those who can't wait, check out the DVS website, we have uploaded one sampler from the album. Still one week to go to win a signed copy of this long awaited new CD. Check it out!

Wolverine signs to Elitist / Earache

With a little sadness we have to announce that Wolverine signs to Elitist / Earache records for the next album, with an option for 3 more. But on the other hand we are proud that the band can sign to a major label and because our philosophy is helping young bands with their first steps in the music scene we helped them out with this deal. After Into Eternity who will sign to Century Media it is the second band that will sign to a major label, and that is just what we wanted when we started DVS Records.

Arena: Great news – Arena's fifth studio album is now finished!

Text found on the Arena page of www.verglas.com :

John and Clive finally agreed on the last of the mixes just a few days ago. They will be mastering the album at Abbey Road on 10th of September, but we already know it sounds excellent – the seven months of recording and mixing really paid off!

That's the good news. The bad news is that we have no choice but to release the album next year. The new release date is 27th of January 2003. But be sure it will be worth waiting for! The earliest we could have released 'Contagion' this year (allowing time for the relevant promotion) would be November, which is obviously unwise due to the nature of the "Christmas market". This delay is frustrating for everybody but it will be the wisest cause of action in the long run.

This of course means the tour will be delayed as well. Arena will now promote 'Contagion' on tour during April and beyond. Remember, unless the concert is on our gig guide, it is not confirmed. In the mean time, there will be promotional appearances from the boys in various countries over the next few months, including an unplugged concert in Holland.

There will be a Christmas competition to win advance copies of 'Contagion', and it will be available through our store a little while before the release. Furthermore, Mick assured us that the work on the EPs will begin very soon.

Keep an eye on the website for plenty of clues as to the look and the sound of the new album. Hopefully we can make the release of 'Contagion' a real event.

Pallas.

We've heard a rumour Pallas' orginal singer, Euan Lowson, may make a guest appearance with the band at their forthcoming show at de Boerderij, Zoetermeer. The concert's being filmed for a DVD to be released on Inside Out next year. Sources close to the band say they may be performing some very old material not played since Euan left in the early 80's

Dream Theater

The Dream Theater announced that there would be no more Christmas CD’s. In January they gave a surprise CD with a preview of “Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence” called “Four Degrees Of Radio Edits”. But that’s not all for this year. This week, the latest magazine arrived with a CD included. So, again a good reason to become a member.
http://www.dreamtheater.net/fanclubs.htm

This is the text that you can find on the back of the CD:
“These three songs were recorded as a demo deal struck with the then ATCO label. The basic tracks were recorded by producer David Prater, in a single session at Beartracks Studios,Suffern, New York, in May 1991. Guitars, keyboards and overdubs were recorded at Prater’s 16-track basement home studio in New Jersey. The demos were then submitted to the label and on the strength of these three tracks, a recording deal was immediately struck. Here, for the very first time, the original demo is officially re-issued, in 2002, as a strictly limited edition – which is only available through the Dream Theater International Fan-clubs – to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Images And Words album.”

Track list: 1. Metropolis Part I “The Miracle And The Sleeper” (9’19) – 2. To Live Forever (4’34) – 3. Take The Time (8’08)

The numbers are different versions from the album, which make them very interesting. I can only say that if a band would come to my label with this demo, I would give them a deal right away. And if I didn’t have a label, I would start one.

TRANSATLANTIC VIDEO - "BUILDING THE BRIDGE"
The making of Bridge Across Forever

There are some experiences that do not translate well to film. Making an album can be one of them because it is such a long arduous process, but, somehow, this new Transatlantic video does the impossible. It takes you through every part of the journey, through each of the member’s eyes, from the uncertain start to the triumphant finish, in just under 2 hours!! You'll feel like you were there while they made this extraordinary album. From the writing process at NEAL MORSE'S house, to MIKE PORTNOY'S amazing drum cam footage, to ROINE STOLT'S stunning guitar work, to PETE TREWAVAS spot on bass playing, you'll get to see and hear the music that made it on the album, and some that was left behind. Plus, there are a lot of wacky antics as well. See MIKE PORTNOY take 3 hours to put on his own cymbals, and the now infamous 'map of Afghanistan Tongue' tribal dance...well, you'll just have to see it!

The quality of the footage is incredible! Shot on Sony Digi-cams and edited entirely in the digital domain, ‘BUILDING THE BRIDGE’ should satisfy even the snootiest video connoisseur. It also comes in a beautiful 4 color box designed by Martin Kornick.

To answer a question we know we’ll be asked, the band has opted to NOT release this on DVD at this time. The plan is to use SOME of the video as a bonus on the TRANSATLANTIC – LIVE IN HOLLAND DVD scheduled for release in the fall.

Phillip J. Satterley (Editor Extraordinaire who also did the 'SPOCK'S BEARD - MAKING OF V' video) has taken the footage that the band and their friends shot and turned it into a major event not to be missed. Directed by NEAL MORSE and PHILLIP J. SATTERLEY. Running time: approx. 2 hours. Available in NTSC and PAL formats.

The upcoming TOTO album "Through the Looking Glass" will be a very special TOTO record. Star One

First concert sold out.

The first 'Star One featuring Ayreon' gig in Zoetermeer is completely sold out now. If you want to reserve a ticket for 013/ Tilburg you better do it quickly, because the pre-sales are going very fast!
Also for the other gigs in Germany, Belgium and Holland there are still tickets available.

Female backing singer for the tour confirmed.

I once saw a girl freaking out in the audience to the music of After Forever. She turned out to be Floor's younger sister Irene Jansen. Now we were looking for a backing singer, and I jokingly said to Floor that it was a pity that her sister wasn't a singer, because she would look great on stage together with Floor. To my surprise Floor told me that her sister is a great singer!
At first I wasn't so sure about it, it would be too good to be true. So they recorded some of the Star One and Ayreon songs together, they sent it to me on minidisc and it sounds amazing, what a pair!
Also: Fluteplayer Ewa Albering will join us on stage during the Dutch gigs. She used to play in a Polish progband called Quidam. I've already worked with her in my studio, and she's great. Most recently she played flute on the latest Nolan/Wakeman project 'Hound of the Baskervilles'. Right now we are working on some surprises, more details later!

Peter Gabriel

On his first studio album in a decade, Peter Gabriel is moving in the right direction.
Up, due September 24, follows in the two-letter tradition he started with 1986's So and continued through his last studio recording, 1992's
“Us”.
The determining factor in coming up with the title of Gabriel's ninth proper album (not including 1989's Passion, his soundtrack to the Martin Scorsese film "The Last Temptation of Christ") was left to his fans. He gave them the choice between Up or I/O, which stands for "input/output." As he explains it, his options were limited.
Despite the immediate connotation of the title, Up is anything but cheery. It's actually downright gloomy, rife with themes of loss, loneliness and — the most obvious premise derived from song titles like "Darkness," "Dark" and "I Grieve" — death.

The LP's first single is one of the few offerings on the 11-track album that's more social commentary than introspective soul bearing. While it may seem "The Barry Williams Show" would be the best thing to happen to the actor familiarly known as Greg Brady since The Return of Johnny Bravo, it actually has nothing to do with him. Rather, the song, ominously driven by a plunging bass line and punctuated with horns, is about the proclivity of reality TV.

Guests: The Blind Boys of Alabama, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, ex-Fleetwood Mac-gitarist Peter Green and bass player Danny Thompson (Talk Talk, David Sylvian, Tim Buckley, Nick Drake). (source: VH1, Billboard]

John Wetton

On July 20th-21st, the John Wetton Fan Convention took place in the USA where the fans not only chanced to meet their hero but also witnessed Wetton reuniting with Geoff Downes from Asia. Both this gig and the main one are out on CDs now and available for ordering at the Wetton's official site.

There are two versions of John Wetton's CD, an unedited one - with pauses between songs and chat with audience, and a shortened one, containing only songs but with two more on it. So you gotta decide... The proceeds will benefit Sierra Leone.

Uriah Heep

  • Thieves steal prized memorabilia!  Ken Hensley's manager, Martin Darvill, speaks: "We would be grateful if all website readers could be aware that we have suffered a robbery here at QED Global.  Among the items stolen were a prized Dommenget guitar bearing the inscription of Ken Hensley on the 12th fret, various amps/speakers, merchandise, CDs and a number of personal items.  If anybody hears of any cheap memorabilia being offered in suspicious circumstances, would they kindly notify us care of the webmaster (webmaster@ken-hensley.com)".  It appears that during the recent memorabilia robbery, the thieves helped themselves to quantities of merchandise.  To add to the logistical problems caused by overwhelming webstore demand, our entire stock of "Making of Running Blind" Video CDs has been stolen.  This item has had to be re-ordered and we apologise for any further delay in fulfilling outstanding orders.
  • Ken Hensley in Pandora's Box on TotalRock (http://www.totalrock.com). Sunday 4th August, Pandora interviewed her special guest Ken Hensley, and he talked about the past, present & future - including his years with Uriah Heep.  Pictures taken during the interview can be found at the "News" section of the website at http://www.ken-hensley.com !

Fish

The "Kettle of Fish" DVD is going into production as soon as I am happy with the elements. I rejected the first master I was sent as the lip synch quality on the filmed interview was terrible and the interview/voice-over that is on a separate soundtrack was unintelligible and I insisted it be re-recorded. That is now accomplished and once I am satisfied and have the units here at the Studio I will make it available for sale.
"Sunsets on Empire" will also be released on DVD later this Autumn. I am trying to secure the rights to the documentary directed by Jorg Bushka which some of you may have seen at the Conventions. It was filmed in Koln on the Sunsets tour and is a great insight into the band and crew on a tour which was the most extensive I ever attempted and which nearly broke me. A separate interview on the tour is also planned as a feature.
Both titles will be in PAL and NTSC.

I travel to Germany on the 8th to meet up with Mario Boelt from the Company Germany. We will be viewing the edits of the 4 camera shoot that was made in Enschede at the recent European Convention. The images and edits I have seen so far are excellent and capture the incredible vibe of the weekend. Elliot Ness will be mixing the sound in late August and I will be interviewed on my thoughts as yet another feature on the DVD which is planned for release just before Christmas.
As well as the DVD I will be putting together a separate live album of material due for release around the same time.
Apart from the Canterbury festival on the 23rd August and the Norwegian tour in September I plan to spend the rest of the year working on "Field of Crows!".
There may be some independent dates in November/December as part of the recordings but the next main tour will not leave these shores until March next year.

ARETMIY ARTEMIEV & KARDA ESTRA - EQUILIBRIUM

Richard Wileman:

“Well, as you would expect, my big news this month is my collaboration CD with Russian avant/ambient 'electroacoustic' composer Artemiy Artemiev EQUILIBRIUM (Electroshock Records) is finally out! I've been an admirer of Artemiy's since I first heard him in 2000 and this is my first foray into a full ambient/experimental album. I really loved recording it - full credit to Artemiy who had the confidence to just let me take his soundscapes and do what I felt was right - a wonderful musical question and answer exercise and bless him, he didn't change a single note/mix that I created! Ileesha and Caron also make appearances and I am immensely proud of this release. It was six weeks of 'white heat mode' recording and was like taking a holiday from my usual methods of working - although I do remember the beads of sweat one autumn night as I fought to record guitar against the most bizarre rhythm I've ever played against on the track 'The Tellar Of The Tale.' It's very experimental, atmospheric and can be both very serene or dark.

See the EQUILIBRIUM page on my website for track details, reviews and places it can be bought from. A HUGE thanks to Artemiy for making this happen. Big thanks to every radio station that's playing it too- Artemiy has been keeping me up to date.

I'm also very happy that “Andraiad” from “Eve” has been released on the Progressive Ears website compilation EARSONGS 2 album. We're featured alongside several superb new progressive bands and musicians spanning the whole stylistic range of the genre. I love the PE website and am delighted to be included. Work is steadily progressing on the next full Karda Estra album. I hope for it to be released start 2003. More news next time. “

Kansas

Kansas will release DEVICE VOICE DRUM, a live concert recorded for DVD and featuring performances of such mega hits as Dust In The Wind, Carry On Wayward Son and Point Of Know Return, on the Compendia Music Group label on October 8.

This Next Compilation has already been released on July 2, but I want to include it on this news page because it’s a very interesting release. Epic/Legacy is proud to present The Ultimate Kansas, a 36-track retrospective of their incredible tenure on Epic/Kirshner records. Containing their biggest hits, fan favourites and live tracks, The Ultimate Kansas is the most comprehensive overview of these American prog-rock pioneers. All the tracks have been re-mastered, including hits from their early albums such as “Song For America” (Song For America) and “Journey From Mariabronn” (Kansas) and “Glimpse of Home” (Monolith). One of the most exciting selections is the re-mastering of “Mysteries and Mayhem” and “Pinnacle” (Masque), joined together as they were originally written, a must-listen for KANSAS collectors!
