Medea

Since I signed with Snakebite Records, I have been more than busy with the recording of my new rock opera Room XVII. Most of the guitars are ready and keyboards are almost done. But a lot of work shows up when you’re working on such an album, rehearsing the vocal parts, artwork material, backing vocals,… It’s all very nice to have a chance to do this and it’s also a challenge. And now a new challenge pops up.
For one track I will have the unique collaboration of a big professional men’s choir. (Lambardi: www.mannenkoor-lambardi.nl). The choir has 75 singers. It promises to become a very bombastic track.

The new album will be released in November and will be called ROOM XVII’. Once again it’s a promising concept album. This time I will use a real drummer: Fon Janssen (a.o. Mennen, Project Fear).
And the rest of the cast is quite impressive:

Rob Laarhoven (Casual Silence, ex-Darwin’s Pride)
Ernst le Cocq d’Armandville (Casual Silence)
Joss Mennen (Mennen)
Edwin Balogh
(Ayreon, Tamas, Supersonic)
Sandra Peeters (V-Male)
Nanda Philipse
Marjolein Husken (Sylver Myst)
Maurice Fende (Jesus Christ Superstar)
Robbie van Stiphout (Day Six)
Eric Smits (Casual Silence)
Dirk van Helmond (Queen Of Hearts)

The artwork is delivered by Erwin Munsters. (Once In A Blue Moon, State Of Mind)

The concept mixes past and present, fiction and non-fiction with a theme about schizophrenia with the voyage of the ship Batavia in the background.

I'm facing the challenge of doing better than my previous album ‘Individual Unique’ and I will do everything to accomplish this.

With friendly musical greetz,
Henry Meeuws

RICK WAKEMAN

MADE IN CUBA - (DVD)

Classic Pictures Entertainment introduces the official DVD release of…
RICK WAKEMAN – MADE IN CUBA (DVD) on September 5th 2005.

In April 2005, invited by the Ministry of Culture, the Cuban Music Institute and the Swiss foundation, “Association Friends of Cuba” – Rock Keyboard legend Rick Wakeman travelled to Havana, to perform a series of concerts that will forever be recognised internationally as an enormous event for the Cuban people, and a historic moment marked by the importance of one of the first and largest official Rock concerts ever to be performed on the Island.

The trip was initiated by the Swiss-Cuban solidarity group which supports and sponsors a hospital in Havana specifically for children with cancer.  With the intention of raising awareness for the charity Rick was happy to help in any way he could before continuing his tour to Mexico and Costa Rica.

This DVD captures the spectacular performances along with a documentary on this momentous event which will undoubtedly be worthy of an entry in the chronicles of rock music history.

“Made in Cuba”, the DVD will present Rick Wakeman with his band the English Rock Ensemble performing to a 5,000 capacity crowd live at the Karl Marx Theatre in Havana, Cuba.

Wakeman devoted most of the concert to classic tunes from the 1970s, including songs from his "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" (’73), "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" (’74) and “King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table” (75) albums, plus a recent stage favourite from the “Out There” album called “Cathedral of the Sky” and the YES classics “Starship Trooper” and “Wurm”.

A report by AP about the final concert said, “The crowd roared when he played ‘Arthur’ -- the theme song for a weekly cultural program on Cuban television titled, ‘History of Cinema.’”

Solstice Coil

Israeli Alt-progressive rock band, Solstice Coil, announces work on their debut album is finished! The album, due to be released on the 21st of September was mastered by Mr. Tali Katz on the 7/8/05 and will soon be sent to the printers to be distributed in Israel and around the world. It is produced by the band without any outside interference.

The album, titled 'A Prescription for Paper Cuts', is the product of two years of extensive and intense work in and outside of the studio. Included in the album are progressive rock opuses 'Selling Smoke' and 'Anyone can Be'. It will also include 16 pages of graphic art by Ofer Vishnia, including a graphic novel relating to the main concept of the album.

Solstice Coil's music blends the powerful sound and emotional charge of alternative bands such as Radiohead, Muse, The Mars Volta and Porcupine Tree, with the precise compositions and arrangements of classic prog bands such as Genesis, King Crimson and Yes, as well as influenced by modern prog and prog-metal groups Dream Theater, The Flower Kings, Pain of Salvation and Anekdoten. The outcome is a 50 minutes long journey into an exquisite world of sound and melody that stimulates both heart and mind.

Here is the set list for the album:

1) Photosensitivity (4:13)
2) Caveat Emptor (1:33)
3) Selling Smoke (9:09)
4) Deep Child (6:15)
5) Even Poets Die (7:18)
6) Accidents (6:01)
7) Enjoy the Ride (5:31)
8) Anyone Can Be (A Porn Star) (6:45)
9) Brilliance (4:48)

Gazpacho

Firebird available now!

It's finally here! Exciting times for the band as we are now launching this through Intact Records! We hope you listen to it loud on your system from start to finish (over a glass or bottle of wine or anything else that takes your fancy) and then over and over again..:-)

The album provides a blend of emotional, inventive, melancholic artrock. We feel it is our most accomplished and personal work to date. A heavier sound picture then their predecessors, but simultaneously some of our most fragile works... If you like it when the drums go 'boom', this is an album for you..:-)
Some highlights: The tension filled opener 'Vulture', the over 8 minute epic 'Orion', and also appearing on Firebird's "Do you Know What You Are Saying", Marillion's guitar legend Steve Rothery contributes with stunning melodic guitars, enigmatic 'Jezebel', the rocker 'Prisoner', challenging 'Firebird', orchestral 'Once in a lifetime'... every song on this album has that little special story to tell...

Final Conflict

 It should have been simple.....

This is Final Conflict's ( FC's ) 20 th year. Our plan was to follow up the success of our Hindsight album with a release of a retrospective album of some of the band's earlier work . " It Should have been Simple " (working title) got under way in late 2004 and should have been completed just about now (June 2005). This release was to be followed by a number of promotional gigs and the writing of new material for album no.6.

Chris Moyden played drums at our last Christmas gigs in extreme pain. After extensive tests the problem has been diagnosed . He has been undergoing intensive hospital treatment for several months and this is expected to continue for some time.

As you will appreciate this has been a blow to everyone concerned as Chris's input into songwriting, engineering, production and artwork is invaluable. He has been able to contribute at a much reduced level this year and we hope this will increase very soon.

Work on "It Should have been Simple" has inevitably slowed due to Chris's illness. FC is a family, a democracy, a team, and can only function well with contributions from all of its members. We all want Chris to contribute, but the protracted nature of his illness has meant that we are having to find creative ways to keep up his level of involvement. We have not yet turned up at his bedside with amps and guitars but we will do what it takes to get this album finished.

Much of the basic recording of the " It Should have been Simple " album (drums /bass / rhythm structures, guides, etc.) was completed early this year with Chris. FC has continued to work on recording and mixing the other parts, as well as writing new music, in anticipation of Chris being able to assist with the production and mastering of the album.

In addition to the 8 revisited tracks, the album will feature the prophetically named title track " It should have been simple ". This all-new track is a creative journey travelling the 20-year history of the FC story and is the dessert to a veritable banquet of Progressive Rock that we hope you will all savour very shortly.

" It Should have been Simple " will be out this year and it will include full input from all members of the band.

Tour

The next leg of PT's Deadwing European tour campaign is now almost entirely in place (just Italian shows to be confirmed). The forthcoming tours of both North Amercia and Europe will include substantially different material to the tours earlier this year, including songs new to the live repertoire. There will be several new films by Lasse Hoile, and PT now also have their own full time dedicated lighting designer. Dave Dickinson will be working closely alongside Lasse in creating a new and stronger visual aspect to the band's shows. Dave has previously worked as LD for artists as diverse as Jimmy Eat World, Kasabian, D12, The Wildhearts, 50 Cent, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra!

For a complete list of the tour: www.porcupinetree.com

Opening act at all the UK shows (and on the east coast in the US) will be legendary guitar player Robert Fripp. Opening act for the rest of the European shows has yet to be confirmed.

Re-releases

The final release date for the digipack edition of the 2CD Stars Die anthology is 26th September. In this scaled down version of the original box set edition, the Dann Chinn essay charting the history of the band will not appear, though the individual track notes remain. SW has also taken the opportunity to substitute the tracks Fadeaway and Up the Downstair with the recently recorded definitive versions with live drums by Gavin Harrisson.

Also released by Snapper on 26th September is a remastered mid-price edition of No-Man's Flowermouth album from 1994 (with 2 bonus tracks from the permanently deleted Flowermix album). Snapper are also issuing the No-Man album Speak at mid-price on 22nd August. This edition is identical to the version which was recently released on SW's Headphone Dust label.

Steven Wilson

In the meantime SW is currently in the studio working on new stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixes of Porcupine Tree's 1999 album "Stupid Dream", which has been unavailable for some time.

Asia

Jay Schellen Joins Asia

Hot off their successful world tour in support of their fan and critically acclaimed album Silent Nation, Asia have parted amicably with drummer Chris Slade (The Firm, AC/DC). The band immediately went down their short list of candidates to fill Slade's formidable shoes.  "Jay was always our first choice as a replacement drummer for Asia", John Payne revealed.  "He played on the demos for some of the Silent Nation tracks and we just clicked right from the start!"

Jay is a very well respected drummer in both the studio and on the stage.  He has graced the ranks of such notable acts as Badfinger & Hurricane.  Most recently, Jay participated in the Chris Squire/Billy Sherwood project, Conspiracy.  Asia founding member Geoff Downes added "We are very happy to welcome Jay to the Asia family and look forward to creating some of our best work to date with him behind the drum kit.  We would just like to add that we wish Chris all the best and he will always remain a friend of Asia."

Asia also enter the studio today to begin recording their follow up to 2004’s highly successful album, Silent Nation.  The album, tentatively called "Architect of Time", will be released sometime in the first half of 2006 on InsideOut Records.

Nick:

unfortunately we have hit a major setback.....the proposed ltd edition of Believe with DVD has had to be completely shelved due to some pretty serious production problems

It's to do with editing in the wrong format, which makes it look ok on computer screen but when you play it on a TV it judders and makes it really hard to watch. Then on top of that you can't play it in NTSC countries...and even if you could the quality we are told would be further downgraded when transferred to NTSC format.
By last Friday afternoon the whole thing was looking like one big liability which is a massive shame because Andy [....a ..former mate of mine] and I have put in loads of 2.30am finishes to get it done.

We are now looking into other ways of making it available, for example , making it downloadable free from our website. Fact is it just won't be upto DVD production, but it's dead interesting so we'd like you all to see it.

We're all a bit shell shocked here, and pretty down about it, but the Believe album is still on course for Aug 29th release and we're confident it is a good enough album it its own right!

Andy and I have more or less made up now......ggrrrrrr

lots of love

Howe - Squire - White

Immigration Drama Scotches Howe-Squire-White Tour
By Barry A. Jeckell, N.Y.(www.billboard.com )

The More Drama Tour, a North American outing combining the side projects of three longtime Yes principals, has been canceled due to immigration problems. The VH1 Classic-presented run was slated to open tonight (Aug. 2) in Seattle and play more than 20 shows before closing Sept. 4 in Cleveland.

Key details surrounding the cancellation were not available at deadline, with a statement saying only that immigration issues arose "in the wake of heightened security brought on by the recent terrorist attacks in London." The U.K.-based artists still hope to mount a tour at another time.

"We're frustrated as much as the fans are but we understand the importance of the heightened security and hope we can reschedule the tour at some point," bassist Chris Squire says. Refunds will be made available through point of sale outlets.

The shows were to feature the music of guitarist Steve Howe, Squire's pre-Yes act the Syn (with original vocalist Stephen Nardelli) and drummer Alan White's new band, White, which also includes another Yes alum, keyboardist Geoff Downes.

The musicians also planned to revisit material from Yes' 1980's album, "Drama," recorded with a lineup of Howe, Squire, White, Downes and guitarist/vocalist Trevor Horn. That incarnation only existed for about a year.

According to the official White Web site, the band -- completed by vocalist Kevin Currie, bassist Steve Boyce and guitarist Karl Haug -- has completed its debut album and planned to sell it at the More Drama shows. No other release information for the self-titled disc is available, although 10 songs can be sampled in the site's multimedia section.
