Spock's Beard drummer and now also their singer Nick D'Virgilio has become full member of the post-punk formation The Rubinoos. Recently, Nick was with the band in Spain and Japan to perform a lot of gigs. You can also hear Nick on their newest album "Crimes against music" on which the band bring you 13 covers in their own “bubblebum” way. Songs from amongst others, Eurythmics, Elvis Costello, American Breed, Sweet, Del Shannon, Beach Boys and Todd Rundgren's Utopia are given a specific Rubinoos arrangement. Certainly a very busy boy, our Nick!!!

It Bites

Located over at the 'lost and found' counter are UK melodic/prog rockers It Bites. Here is a press release from the www.itbites.com website announcing their imminent return:

April 12th 2003: It Bites fans across the world have been crossing their fingers, hoping that Frank, John, Dick and Bob will perform together again. The messages of encouragement really did surprise the boys in terms of enthusiasm and volume - keep up the kind words please. The good news is that all of the four musicians have recently had good constructive conversations with each other and they are now planning a future together as a re-formed band.

Frank has agreed to fly over from the USA in May for a weekend discussion that will see It Bites meeting for the first time in over a decade. They aim to agree on dates for rehearsals and concerts. Also the four will have ideas on marketing the products and arranging interviews and publicity. This will be a big step for them and I’m sure we can wish them all well on behalf of the fans.

The ‘Live in Montreux’ audio CD and the ‘Live in Tokyo’ DVD are now finally being made, but it is likely that they will only be released just one month before the planned tour. This is so that they can maximise the marketing effort and promotion, which gives the press the chance to announce tour dates and the products simultaneously So, the good news is that things are coming together in terms of a future for It Bites - the not-so-good news is that you’ll probably have to wait until June for the new CD and DVD , we at
www.itbites.com can’t wait for Summertime!

The Flower Kings and Kaipa

News Update From Roine

Mixing of new Kaipa CD will start within the next week.
Lundin & Stolt have finished the recordings with
the same team as on "Notes From The Past" - Inside Out 2002.
More work has been put into the writing of music and lyrics and the arrangements on this CD.
Patric Lundstrom of Ritual does some amazingly good vocal performances here and also some great stuff from Aleena who loosens up a bit on the new one and does extensive vocal backup too. This time I and Lundin add backup vocal
s too to give this CD a more vocal approach than before.
This time I've also written or re-written most of
the lyrics and contributed some minor music themes on the new CD.
Instrumental sections are more focused and diverse in sound. Still contains loads of real Hammond and lots of Mellotron
of all sorts.
The album is schedule
d for release in August-September 2003 by Inside Out.

My guess is that it will be,from a music point of view, one of the major 'prog' releases of 2003, together with Tomas Bodin's new CD, that has some lovely soulful writing & great new sounds from Glenn Hughes guitarist Joachim Marsh recommended to Mr Bodin by yours truly ;-)!
Then there is the 'Tangent' and the new 'Karmakanic 2' if you want to indulge even more in Flower Kings land.
'FlowerPower' will have more news on those two projects later this year.

Plus DVD News!!!!
Transatlantic (May) and The Flower Kings (Sept) .......!!!!

That's all for now.

Roine.

Carmen.

Take a look at the new web site dedicated to the music of Carmen, a rock band that in the early seventies created the perfect blend of serious rock and traditional Spanish and flamenco music.

You'll only occasionally find any information on Carmen in encyclopedias or books of rock history but now you can find everything about them on www.fandangosinspace.com

Carmen began recording their first album, Fandangos in Space, in the summer of 73. They met Bowie, Angie, Bolan, Bryan Ferry amongst many others, and whilst recording their first album, Bowie helped promote them on his tv show, Midnight Special (have a look at an outtake).

Carmen recorded their second album, Dancing on a Cold Wind, with Tony Visconti in Feb/March of '74. They flew to the US and began touring for the next year. Played with Santana, Blue Oyster Cult, Golden Earring, Rush, ELO and others.
For three months Carmen opened for Jethro Tull. They recorded their third album,
The Gypsies, in April/May '75 at Longview Farm.

Sun Caged

Arjen Lucassen mixes Sun Caged's debut album

Message from Sun Caged:

"We are very happy to announce that Arjen Anthony Lucassen (Ayreon/Star One) has just finished mixing our album. And we are very excited about the results...!

Arjen has been a good friend of the band ever since our keyboard player, Joost, played with him on the Star One tour last year. Since we are all big fans of Ayreon, and the production on the Ayreon albums, the idea came up that it might be very interesting if Arjen would mix our album. Arjen visited several shows and started to really like our music. Since he was also very happy about the fact he was able to "borrow" Joost from us for two months for the Star One tour, and also because Dennis (who used to be a professional webdesigner) helped setting up the new Ayreon.com website, he decided to give it a try as a returned favour.

Arjen has had uncountable offers from bands to mix their albums, and has always turned these offers down, so we were very pleasantly surprised. Arjen wanted to try one song first to check out the quality of the recordings and check out if he would be able to work with the recordings. He mixed one songs and that mix blew all of our socks off. Arjen was very happy with the quality of the recordings, and very excited about the songs, so he immediately started mixing the entire album.

We are extremely happy with the results and we can't wait to share them with the world. The album will be released in the first week of June. We will announce the exact date and label very soon!"

Apocalyptica

Now that the European "Reflections" tour is nearly over, we wanted to invite all those to the new "Fanclub" section on www.apocalyptica.com, who haven't been able to join Apocalyptica at one of their gigs. There you can find a whole lot of interesting tour pictures in the new fan galleries. Everybody who still has pictures, he/she would like to see published on the official Apocalyptica website is very welcome to send those to the heads of the fanclub.

The new album "Reflections" has found its way throughout the world. By now, it has been released in over 30 countries. Anywhere from Thailand to Poland, from Russia to Mexico or from India to Italy fans are enjoying the new album. As for a US release: This is still something the band is working on right now. But we are pretty sure, that little problem will also be solved soon.

As the album release was already two months ago, the band thought it would be a great idea to release something brand new. By May 19, a new single will hit the stores: "Far Away Vol. 2".

The tracklisting of the single reads as follows:
1. Far Away Vol. 2
2. Far Away Vol.2 (extended version)
3. Perdition (previously unreleased)

You will probably wonder by now why it is "Vol. 2". That is, because they have asked Linda Sundblad from Lambretta to add her vocals to this song. So, watch out!

Apocalyptica's future plans: There will definitely be several live appearances at summer festivals this year.

Shine On

SHINE ON or the little PINK FLOYD

25-04-2003

Hoeve Ferme Holleken – 212 Hollebeekstraat – 1630 Linkebeek (Belgium)

Doors : 20.00 h  Concert : 21.00 h  Dance party 24.00 h(€ 7.00)

Information : Michprog 0032-475 83 01 49

We are lucky to have them in our small village for a promising, big show.

Their first gig was in 1997 in Cultuur Rock in Châtelet. The band changes into the present formation with Jacques Leboute (founder, guitar and biggest fan), Giacomo Aronica (keyboards), Carlo Di Calogero (guitar), Dominique Leroy (percussion), Marc Weymaere (drums) and Eddy Broodcoorens (bass)

Their setlist is inspired on the concerts of Pink Floyd, especially on the worldtour “Pulse” from the nineties.

They start their show with “Shine on you crazy diamond”, followed by several hits (we don’t tell you all yet) during a 130 minutes lasting concert.

A show you have to see, so put it down on you calendar.

Star One

Mission Accomplished!
It was a dangerous mission, but one of our Space Crusader agents hunted down a good number of sound samples! The top-secret files have been checked and the voiceprints have been verified to be those of Star One singers. And special analysts have concluded that the samples of the instrumentalists are genuine too.

You can find 18 sound clips safely stored in the Star One pages plus images of the Star One tour. No access codes required, just point, click and listen...

The Tall Minstrel Speaks...
What is going on in the Electric Castle? Will there be another Ayreon? The site has managed to secure a short interview with the man of the hour, Arjen Lucassen. Read it in the Ayreon section.

Want to sing?
Imagine: you are a singer and one of your dreams is to sing on one of Arjen Lucassen's projects. We have good news for you! As you may know, Arjen wants to give unknown talented vocalists the opportunity to be discovered and guest-star on one of his future projects. A few weeks ago he asked for his fans to send in recordings of their voices and the response has been great!

So far Arjen has received many recordings- but these have all been of metal singers. Those of you familiar with Arjen's music know that he works with a lot of different types of singers. Since the list of well-known and lesser-known metal singers is getting rather long- he is now looking for non-metal singers.

Do you think you fit that description? Then don't hesitate any longer: send in recordings of your voice! It doesn't matter how or where you recorded it, or even what the quality is- as long as your voice can be heard clearly. Please send it snail mail only. Do not send Arjen sound files through email. He will not open any emails with attachments. You can find Arjen's mailing address on the site.

Redecorate with Star One!
The scientists at Space Crusader headquarters read a request on the Ayreon.com messageboard asking for more Star One wallpapers. They immediately dispatched an urgent message to artist Mattias Norén. Mattias was kind enough to create wallpapers for ALL Star One songs. You can find them in the "downloads" section of the
Star One pages. Thank you, Mattias! (www.progart.com )

DAVE RECORDING WITH OLIVER WAKEMAN
Drummer Dave Wagstaffe has recently again taken the drum chair for Oliver Wakeman with some recording sessions for Olivers next solo album, entitled 'Mothers Ruin'. Production is still under way and no release date for the album has been set, though there is a possibility of live dates later in the year.

HUGH McDOWELL (CELLO) TO GUEST WITH LANDMARQ
Cellist Hugh McDowell (Electric Light Orchestra, Orchestra/ELO Part II, OrKestra, Roy Wood's Wizzard, Kiki Dee, etc) will make a guest appearance with Landmarq at their Underworld gig in Camden, London, on Sunday May 25th 2003. The band has also asked Hugh to appear on their next studio album.

LAURENT HUNZIKER (SAX) TO GUEST WITH LANDMARQ
French saxophonist Laurent Hunziger will also join Landmarq on stage at their Underworld gig. Laurent, who lives in Paris, has worked with many artists and bands in France (and beyond!) and has also had the pleasure of working with Supertramp, having joined them for their gig in Paris in 2002.
Fans, who saw Landmarq's very successful appearance at the Baja Prog festival in Mexico, back in 2001, will remember Hawkwind sax-player Nik Turner joining the band on stage for their encore 'Summer Madness'.

Lorian

On Sundaynight April 27, there’s a project presentation of “Lifecycle from the symphonic rockband Lorian in De Rode Hoed in Amsterdam.

The project is about a brother and sister who are looking for their disappeared father. They find his diary carved in a wall of their parental house. The story gives them the opportunity to get to know him better. The story is spread over 9 different songs. The members of Lorian have listened very well to bands like Marillion, Camel and Pink Floyd, but they produce their own sound. They combine melody and a strong, dynamic rhythm. During the gig, the story is explained by the projection of images above the stage.

Belfort, France, on June 7, 8 and 9.  Go to www.fimu.com to see something about that festival.  This is the second year in a row that we have been invited to Belfort; and it is huge honour for us.  We were one of only two bands in the USA to be invited.

We then go on to Luxembourg to visit our drummer's sister and to hopefully do a gig at L'inoui.  We do have a confirmed gig for Spirit of 66 in Verviers, Belgium, on June 12; and then we go to Hot Jazz Club in Muenster, Germany, for June 13-14.  Following those two days in Muenster, we will go do a gig in den Haag on June 15; and a possible gig on June 19 in Amsterdam.  We are attempting to fill a few holes in our schedule.  We have also been invited to go to Festival des Rabat in Morocco, beginning June 20.

We have musical ties to both Gong and Gongzilla.
Peace, No War.
