I am a relative newcomer to the works of British quintet Landmarq, this far only acquainted to their last, very fine studio album ‘Science Of Coincidence’. This record already dates from 1998, and only a few live albums have been issued since. The new DVD ‘Turbulence: Live in Poland’ finally offers a whole set of brand new songs, that will hopefully be on the band’s forthcoming fulltime studio CD. If this will prove to be on par with this DVD jewel, a small sensation is in the process of being delivered. An important contribution is made by Tracy Hitchings, putting her impressive vocal talents against the background of a very fine theatrical performance. The ideal progrock vamp, no doubt. Instrumentally there is enough sweetness as well, when the band is delivering some tight ensemble playing. Live they put down a real “wall of sound” without pomposity, yet subtle and nicely balanced. Uwe D’Rose’s guitar, sometimes Gilmourian, is top notch. New keyboard player Mike Varty (Shadowland) is settling nicely in the band, delivering keys that are rather functional than showing off technical prowess. New works ‘Entertaining Angels’, ‘Walking On Eggshells’ and ‘Timeline’ reign by the grace of their splendid melody lines and intricate arrangements. With this DVD the band has gained another fan. So, lady and gentlemen, how long still for the new CD to arrive? Visually Landmarq is a fine act as well, offering a well-crafted show and amusing performances. The Polish boys from Metal Mind Productions certainly executed a great job here: the concert in Katowice’s beautiful venue is exquisitely directed and the sound recording is perfect. That cannot be said from most extra’s. The interview with La Hitchings, bassist Steve Gee and drummer David Wagstaffe tickles our interest reasonably. But the extra video’s of old concert recordings (some featuring Damian Wilson, others from Wagstaffe’s band Janison Edge) reveal amateur camerawork and rather lousy sound bits of which the relevance escapes me. And a bonus audio on DVD? Still, this is all but second-rate criticism. What really counts, is the excellent concert registration from November 2005 showing a band with full potential at its creative peak. |
