This is already
the third IQ DVD, (‘Subterranea’ and ‘The Twentieth Anniversary
Show’) but this one has something special. First of all, it’s the
first DVD with their new drummer Andy (ex-Robert Plant), only
playing his second show with the band and he’s doing a hell of a
job, knowing that the IQ tracks aren’t the easiest to play drums on.
And of course, it contains the Nearfest gig, a document every band
wishes to have in its discography. You even get two DVD’s for the prize of one. It’s a pity the two DVD’s contain two shows that were only one week apart and what’s even worse, don’t contain any extra songs. So, why not present only one show? Well, there’s a difference. The show at Nearfest was perfect and clean, with a great sound and a beautiful light show, but the musicians were apparently under the impression by the American public or the fact that they were playing on Nearfest or too aware that they were recorded on DVD? I don’t know but they are too static and there’s not enough interaction between the musicians. What a difference with the second show in Germany, where they were enjoying the show, making jokes and jumping around or in other words, they were just being IQ as we know them from the live shows. The first show is brilliantly filmed but I still prefer the second because of the better live feeling. Apart from getting twice the same set list, there’s nothing to complain about. This is progressive rock at its best. Martin Orford is playing a big part in this band, as usual, with his great keyboard playing, but also, very important, with his excellent backing vocals. Jon Jowitt, one of the better bass players in the progressive rock world, is enjoying the show as usual. Peter, often criticized for his vocals, is getting better by the years and Mike, humble as always, shows what guitar playing is all about. And, as said earlier, Andy drums with the band as if he was their drummer for some years. Everyone is releasing DVD’s now, but this is one of the better releases. And don’t forget, you get two gigs for the prize of one. And some special features, including images of Andy’s first gig and the sound check for Nearfest. |
