nederlands Review

This DVD offers a very fine idea of what Iona brings live on stage. The concert was recorded on November 18th 2004. The beginning of the concert can be watched on DVD2. It’s an acoustic set which was done by Iona instead of having a support act. On the second part of this disk every member of the band is being interviewed.
The main programme, being the complete show, can be watched on the first disc. What you get is the typical Iona sound: a bit mystical, a lot of folk ingredients, a voice as clear as crystal and a lot of love for the music itself. It really shows on the band members’ faces that they enjoy playing. They are relaxed, smile all the time and joke in between the songs. The craftsmanship of the musicians is so obvious as they play their different instruments and create different soundscapes. The drumming is of a gorgeous variety and is much more than a rhythm support to the music. The range of instruments Troy Donockley plays each time change the atmosphere and invite the audience to float on their sounds. Dave Bainbridge proves to be a great and inspired guitar player and is the bridge to the progressive element in Iona’s music. The sound engineering is just perfect, as is the camera work.
The songs are a mixture of the band’s classic tracks and some new work from the CD that is to be released any day now. Judging from these few tracks, the new album, which the fans have had to wait for for about six years, will be a jewel. Meanwhile they can watch this DVD and save up for Iona’s next concert, ‘cause this is a kind of gig you wouldn’t want to miss.
