This 20th anniversary edition of Dream Theater became one to lick your fingers. There’s not much I must tell you about this five virtuoso’s because every progressive metal fan is well known with the music and talents of this great band. This DVD takes you on a journey through 20 years Dream Theater history in a live performance while the band is in their great shape. In the first set Dream Theater plays their highlight points from their albums and you notice that LaBrie even sings better than he ever did before live. The first set ends with the apotheose from Metropolis - “The Spirit Carries On”. The second set is one with a complete symphonic orchestra in the background which may open the set by playing the intro of “Six Degrees Of The Inner Turbulence”. This giant song is brought in his entire length but in a more powerful version than on the studio album. Also highlights from “Octavarium” are played together with orchestra - “The Answer Lies Within” – “Sacrified Sons” & “Octavarium”. There’s also a solo spot of Jordan Rudess whereby he plays his new ‘continuum fingerboard’ and the lap steel guitar. The second set closes with “Metropolis”. On the bonus material, which include three more songs, you can hear that LaBrie’s capacities once where not as good as they are now and he had some difficult moments by reaching the highest notes. Furthermore there is a 3 minutes funny ‘octavarium animation’ with typical Portnoy humour and a long documentary (over the 56 minutes) with their whole career from beginning to end including the Berklee high school days and interviews with fans and band members. It’s a kind of funny to see some old pictures of the band or to hear some stories from that time. This DVD is the best they ever released and more than worth to buy. |
