nederlands Review

‘Emotional Creatures:Part One’, from Steve Thorne, was one of the best symphonic albums of 2005 that had really impressed me. This singer/song writer and multi-instrumentalist is a gifted singer and the album contained very solid songs. Steve had collected a multitude of musicians to help him out, such as Nick D’Virgilio (Spock’s Beard, Tears for Fears), Jon Jowitt (IQ) and Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, Liquid Tension Experiment), just to name a few. There was already mention of a follow-up album after the release of the first one and this had created some high expectations. So, have these expectations been fulfilled? You can read here and find out…

This latest CD contains, once again, 11 masterpieces that both excites and fixates you, thanks to the lovely voice of Steve himself. The very symphonic and well constructed compositions are, once again, supported by the crème de la crème of the prog scene… Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel), Geoff Downes (Asia, Yes), Nick D’Virgilio (Spock’s Beard, Genesis), Pete Trewawas (Marillion, Kino, Tranatlantic), Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree), John Mitchell (It Bites, Arena, Kino), Dave Meros (Spock’s Beard), Martin Orford (IQ, Jadis) and many others.

It would be pointless to describe every song. But what I can say is that they are all equally strong and that the album is built up around the same feeling. The instrumental parts, especially the guitar parts, are stronger than those on Part One. It probably has something to do with the import of super-guitarist John Mitchell.

Something that I didn’t notice on the very first album but do notice now is the big resemblance of Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel. After a thorough listening session, the music connoisseurs will recognize the similarities with Harley’s construction, musical structure, voice timbre and even singing style here on Part Two.

If you are a symphonic rock lover with a weakness for solidly composed songs that are performed by amazing musicians and sung by a multi-talented singer, then you better wake up and go purchase this CD. Once having done that, then I can imagine that you’ll do as I had done and kick back in your Lazy Boy recliner with dimmed lights and a glass of wine and have uninterrupted enjoyment of the 55 minutes that this fantastic album has to offer.
