First impression: What does this band
has in common with “Metal”? Melodic Metal? Either way it’s quite commercial, comparable to, for exempel, Lordi. It’s like a fusion of rock/hardrock and pop. Most people in the band are fairly well know: Guitarist Pontus Norgren played with vocalist Jacob Samuel in Talisman and The Ring, Bassist Pontus Egbert played in Lions Share and Zan Club, drummer Christian Lundqvist played with peter & The Chiefs. The first song is “Echoes from the Past”, a rocksong that’s pretty easy to listen too. It’s followed by the number one hit “Metal Will Stand Tall” (a duet with Tess of Alcazar), which fit perfectly in the Songfestival. (after all, the track already got a gold record) The next song, “Night of Passion” (with backing vocals by Mats Levén) got Platina and reached 4rd place in the Swedish competition for the Songfestival, it’s quite a catchy song. Some of the co-songwriters are Holly Knight of Tina Turner, Aerosmith and Kiss, and Tommy Denander. I personally quite like the next song (“Song for You”), especially the beginning, with opera vocals of Jonas Samuelsson-Nerbe) and a nice, pop-ish tune. It’s a cool song! “Shadows” is al lot more commercial (could be the next single?). It’s followed by “Lie to Me” (written by Tommy Denander and Holly Knight), with vocals similar to Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam). “Rockstar” is a rocksong. Nothing special. After that, there’s an Ultravox-cover “Dancing with Tears in My Eyes”: It’s not bad, but nothing to write home about. “Don’t Give Up On Love” was written by ex-Jagged edge vocalist Matti Alfonzett and sounds like a commercial rocksong but not as metal at all. “Number One” has the lyrics “Lose my Religion” in it, which reminds me of R.E.M., but only the lyrics. “Kingdom of Heaven” is catchy and would do well at concerts. The finishing song “Crying” is a rockballad like many others. Don’t let the title of the cd mislead you. The Poodles (what’s in a name?) delivers music for a large audience. There’s some nice guitarwork, the songs are easy and recognizable and you can sing along with almost any of them. I give it a 6.5/10 |
