When I received LA TORRE DELL’ALCHIMISTA’s live album USA… You Know on my reviewing desk two years ago, I was quite impressed. Apart from being a great album, it opened the extensive world of Italian prog for me, something I hardly knew anything about. I’ve come to like quite a few progressive rock bands from that country since then, but LA TORRE… is still my favourite. And their newest album, Neo, doesn’t disappoint. It continues is very much the same style, without any real surprises, though it is clear the band has progressed. Leading man in the band is Michele Mutti, keyboard player extraordinaire, whose prominent playing is very reminiscent of Keith Emerson. The music is grand and melodic, at times very bombastic and pompous, at other times intimate and romantic. No guitars -which isn’t unusual with Italian bands- but you’ll hardly miss this. Fans of 70’s sounding, keyboard driven symphonic prog will love this. |
