Oliver Hartmann’s first solo album, Out In The Cold (2005) was a magnificent surprise. The German vocalist, who was previously mainly known as a metal singer (AT VANCE, AVANTASIA, GENIUS), delivered a wonderful album of melodic rock and AOR. Maybe a bit hard to swallow for his many metal fans who were used to something quite a bit heavier, but no-one could deny that this was a great effort. Now his second album is ready, and it follows the same path as its predecessor, although it never quite reaches the same heights. Still, Hartmann’s vocals (à la Coverdale, Jamison) are incredible – he again he proves to be one of the finest singers in this genre as well. The musicianship on the album is excellent. The songwriting is skilfully done as well; no complaints there, although none of the tunes really stands out as some of Out In The Cold did. Musically, you have to place Hartmann’s sound mainly in the eighties, when artists like SURVIVOR managed to get their songs in the hit lists. In fact, if this still were the eighties, many of the songs presented on Home would be contenders to score well there.
Not quite as exhilarating as his debut, but you can hardly call a
fine album like this a disappointment. |
