nederlands Review

Although the name of Daryl Stuermer will not appeal to everyone, this guitar player has gained a lot of fame in music business, not at the least throughout his cooperation to live concerts with Genesis and especially Phil Collins, he was also present on all studio albums of the latter. At the beginning of his career he was also active with the well known jazz violin player Jean-Luc Ponty. He will also participate at the reunion tour of Genesis this summer.

Go is already the seventh solo album of Stuermer, his latest album has been released by the famous label Inside Out and is described as Rock/Fusion, with a bit more emphasize on rock than his previous albums. And this a true in a way, although Stuermer still follows the same pattern: instrumental, numerous guitar solos, complex fusion and melodic catchy guitar lines. Stuermer plays on this occasion also keyboards, a bit too much to the background. But the guy is a very keen, technically refined guitar player, you may compare him easily with the greatest guitar players like Vai, Satriani, Holdsworth, Al Dimeola and other Larry Carltons. Certainly because you can also hear influences from his jazz career.

‘Striker’ is a typical American sounding track, where the sound reminds of bands like Toto and Steely Dan, but without the vocals naturally. Daryl tries to simulate the vocals with his guitar, but it would be a good idea to introduce a singer to support his music. Still there is enough variation: the Oriental sounding Masala Mantra, the Phil Collins like Breaking Point, the ballad Heavy Heart or fusion à la Chick Corea in Meltdown. Certain tracks have the same kind of atmosphere of former Eef Albers, who played known covers on his lead guitar.

In a nutshell, there is a lot of nice stuff on this album and yet .. I do miss something. Perhaps because of the repetition of certain guitar riffs or the lack of vocals, it is difficult to enchant the listener until the very end on an instrumental album. But this is a must for the true fan.
