nederlands Review

Carptree is now known to a wider audience, thanks to Inside Out, who had released their previous album. Oddly enough, their new album, ‘Insekt’, has been released by their own management. The album falls somewhere between neo-prog and new art rock. Perhaps their musical style can best be compared to Isuldurs Bane and, especially, their ‘MIND vol. 4: Pass’ album. The CD begins very solidly, but afterwards, it goes downhill.

The first five songs of the CD take you on a journey that contains snippets of Marillion (with Fish), Genesis and Peter Gabriel. The wonderful vocal combinations of Niclas Flinck, along with the well thought out harmonies of the Trollhattan Chamber Choir, create a very deep impression on the listener. Musically speaking, the album is supported by material from the masters…

The CD seems to follow another path starting from the sixth song. The songs seem to be less cohesive, but do contain some great elements. There are some very heavy pieces, with guitar work to match, that come at you every now and then. This creates a general chaotic impression and the remaining songs are, unfortunately, less strong. Luckily, the last track is an exception. “Stressless” reminds me of a Roger Waters song, in terms of build up, structure and melody.

‘Insekt’ leaves me with a divided impression. Some songs are very good and others not. Should the listener purchase the CD or not?...
