nederlands Review

Quality never goes unnoticed! I put this CD on without looking at or reading anything that was on the box. All of a sudden, all these thoughts came rushing through my head just by listening to the music. What does this remind me of? This style sounds familiar! What a great song! Starting from the second song, it began to dawn on me.  Damn, this sounds a lot like RPWL. Let me take a look… Oh, I see now… it’s the solo project of Kalle Wallner, guitarist from RPWL and the crème de la crème of the prog scene. It makes sense that it sounds so good J. The Gilmour-style solos pop up here and there. This is music from the upper echelons. The biggest surprise is that the former singer of Arena, Paul Wrightson, sings a few songs on this CD. And even more, Paul sings a song that will probably end up as song of the year (and with a guitar solo to match!). Perhaps it’s too early to be making such a claim!? But before you make any judgements, you first need to listen to “Black Despair” J. Arena fans will be interested from the word ‘go’. The acoustic ballad flows into a climax in the form of an amazing guitar solo. Goose bumps!

In contrast to most RPWL songs, there are moments when Blind Ego comes charging out of the box… especially with the instrumental “Open Sore” and “Moorland” as well as “Break You”! The comparison to RPWL for the rest of the songs on the CD is confirmed. The fans are sure about this. “Hollow” sounds a bit like “Welcome to the Machine”. The title track, “Mirror”, has evolved into a strong Arena-like song. “Don’t Ask Me Why” is sung with a sexy, hoarse voice, and sounds like a song if Peter Gabriel recorded with RPWL. “Forbidden to Remain” could have been an Arena song. There are many comparable Arena elements to be found here once again on this excellent composition. “Forbidden to Remain” could be the climax of this album, however, the bonus track, “Artist Manque”, can hold its own. The song sounds a bit like Yes with Saga riffs. It’s a remixed song from Violet District, the band from which RPWL originated and was when Kalle decided to become a professional musician. A wise choice, if I may say so myself J!

There is loads of potential in Blind Ego and this opens the door for future expectations… Kalle understands that compositions are the most important elements when creating a good CD. The songs are solid as a brick house, brimming with professionalism and musical talent. As far as quality goes, ‘Mirror’, from Blind Ego floats to the top. This can’t continue without results…
