nederlands Review

Amarok (wolf in Eskimo) came into being at the beginning of 1990 as a product of the creative efforts of Robert Santamaría and Lídia Cerón. Robert, who is the main composer of the group, has a long history of multimedia compositions on electronic keyboards and piano. Lídia, the vocalist, had a classical background and training in singing. Amarok is being for years cultivating different musical styles, united in a clear eagerness of fusion and mixed-up. Their concerts are boxes of surprises with notes turned in color, interpretative force, moments of ethnic celebration and music engaged to quality. They presented their music on several concerts: cicle de folk del C.A.T. (Centre Artesà Tradicionàrius) Barcelona – Suristán and Lamala Madrid - at the international rock festival BajaProg in Mexicali, Baja California, México - La Cova, III International Festival of New Music in Catalonia” - l’Espluga de Francolí (Tarragona) and in the First Festival of Medieval Music of Dragón, in Pinto (Madrid).

Now in 2007 the band is back with their seventh and brand new album, "Sol de Medianoche" that is once again breaking new ground. "Sol De Medianoche" is a work in which progressive elements and Mediterranean influences are readily apparent just like in earlier albums. Many folk styles can be heard on this album, Celtic music, Mediterranean folk, some Eastern influences and a bit of progressive music. The songs are sung principally in Spanish, some in Catalan and for the first time in the bands history also in English. The variety of instruments used on this release exceeds anything attempted before by the band, however the arrangements are very precise and there is no sense of overkill. Amarok never fails to innovate and please the ear as well. It’s amazing how they could fuse so many diverse influences with such a pleasant result. This is what you may call ‘Mediterranean progressive Celtic folk rock’.
