I have never
understood why a musical country
like Finland (everyone grows up with the marvellous music of
Sibelius) has so few progressive rock bands. Since Sweden hasn’t
got a composer the same level as Sibelius, it is even funnier that
there are so many Swedish progrockers. Fortunately there is Viima
to fill the Finnish gap. Which they do very well, since their debut
is a refreshing voice in prog’s landscape. For instance there’s the
voice of Päivi Kylmänen, who comes close to Renaissance’s
Annie Haslam. Musically it goes in the direction of folk as well,
though this is still primarily symphonic rock with a good amount of
Scandinavian hospitality. To be consumed during winter months. The
keyboards guarantee shifting moods to great satisfaction, often
paying tribute to that vintage seventies sound. The wind instruments
fill in the general picture further with varying colours. As does
the guitar, changing between fiery bombastic solo’s and acoustic
accompaniment. Very much worth discovering, this Viima, especially
for the amateur of folk-oriented prog like Sinkadus and
Ritual. |
