Is it possible for music to be too diverse? Finland’s UZVA certainly tries very hard to disprove this. The music on the band’s 3rd album, Uoma, ranges from folk, jazz and fusion to rock and classical chamber music, with some eastern influences thrown in for good measure.

Although the albums is mostly jazz oriented, it’s mostly the folky and classical bits which impress me most. There are some really beautiful parts here (‘Lullaby’, ‘Kuoriutuminen’). Although I like my portion of jazz every now and then, some of the parts here tend to be a bit too nervy for me, but that’s just a matter of taste, of course.

On the whole, UZVA manages to blend the many different genres into a quite unique sound. A fine album for those who like a bit of experimentation in their music.
