Basically, Traceelords’ motto is ‘You don’t become a musician, you are one’. The members of the band are real blood-brothers: close friends making genuine, straight rock songs. “The Ali Of Rock” could be considered the third part of a trilogy. The first part was “Sex, Money, Rock ’n Roll”, where the title really says it all. In 2003 they made “Refuse To Kiss Ass”, telling everybody that no compromises would be made. Although the features of the band-members became somewhat more civilised at that time, their songs kept smacking people in the face. For their third album, “The Ali Of Rock”, a new member is introduced in the form of Christof Leim (guitar). The songs on this record are mostly straight rockers, punk and experiments, but there is also a melancholic, melodramatic feeling about the whole thing. At times, some of the songs remind me a lot of Frank Zappa, but there are soft and really heavy songs on there too. “My evil Girlfriend” opens the album in a powerful way, and “Instead”, too, keeps the pace up. These guys really know how to rock. “Room For Improvement” is a nice, quiet song with a whistling melody in the background. Slick takes over the vocals in “Silver Lining”, and he clearly is the better punk singer. “She’s Back” is another one of those punk-rockers, but this time, the melody keeps ringing in your head. “Mr. Marple” is one of those Zappa-moments I mentioned earlier, complete with the required humour. “Watch Me Run” is a harder song, with beautiful guitar parts after the solo, and again sung by Slick Prolodol. “Sunflower” takes thing a bit easier, and it also reminds me of Zappa. Next is the glam-punk rocker “Tear Out My Own Heart”, holding enough originality to stand out. For the next twenty minutes, the record goes on to deliver a wealth of nicely crafted and varied punk-rock songs, ranging from sensitive to extremely heavy. “The Ali Of Rock” ends with “Christ Of Slick’s Haandy”, a song brought acapella and clearly intended as a joke.
It may not be the most original album ever, but it has a clear
message: ‘You can never stop us!!’. The mix of styles and influences
on this production is something you don’t hear often these days.
It’s the small things that make this a great album, but only if you
can see the humour of it all. |
