Robin Taylor is a Danish multi-instrumentalist who may not be very well-known, but he has built up quite an impressive discography of over 20 albums since his 1991 debut, Essay - both solo and with his bands TAYLOR’S UNIVERSE and TAYLOR’S FREE UNIVERSE. Taylor has kindly sent us his latest album, TAYLOR’S UNIVERSE’s Certain Undicoveries, and - despite the title - this has turned out to be quite a pleasant discovery. Over the years, Taylor has mixed a lot of styles and built up quite a varied repertoire: he’s combined prog, rock, jazz, classical and art rock (among others). On this new album, progressive rock of the 70’s seems to be the main inspiration (KING CRIMSON and early Mike Oldfield in particular come to mind). Taylor doesn’t forget his free jazz background either, with some very weird, chaotic pieces, which I’m not particularly fond of. But these are kept to a minimum. Certain Undiscoveries is a fine album of instrumentals, with the guitar, Hammond organ, synthesizer, various saxophones and clarinet (played by SECRET OYSTER’s Karsten Vogel), and even the drums alternately taking the lead. Top tunes include ‘Mandrake’ ‘Little Vic’, ‘Nilfish’, ‘Remember The Bill’ and ‘Kelds Far’. Award for ‘Best Title’ goes to ‘A Beautiful Garden With A Lot Of Depressed Animals’. If you’re looking for an instrumental prog album with a jazzy twist, you could do much, much worse than buying this fine Certain Undiscoveries. |
