A new great (neo-)
progressive bunch of musicians who have to release their own CD’s.
The story of the genre. They are not really new, as this is already
their second album, the first being released in 2003. And they
certainly aren’t new in terms of originality. Their music is filled
to the brim with references to progressive and neo progressive
bands, but it’s performed so well, it’s not a problem at all. Even Steve’s voice is often sounding like his examples, from Gabriel and Collins, via Fish to Peter Nicholls. Starting with the funky, but still very progressive first track, filled with variation, it immediately feels perfect. Intriguing melodies that keep turning back, more symphonic tracks (like “Random”), sometimes heavier (Have You Seen the Light) and by times very soft, (“360°” on violin). Older influences are clearly present, like Genesis, Camel and Marillion (just listen to “Ignorance of Bliss”) and others, but also the new names, like Spock’s Beard and Flower Kings are traceable. They are like the missing link between the older and newer bands. A pity the last track starts as a folk song, (lighthouse Jig), but don’t skip it, as I did the first time, because the second half of the song, is one of the best pieces of the album. And, yes, it’s also a concept album, so the package is complete. The story is about a man who wins the lottery, gets loads of money, but then realises that this doesn’t make him happy. I hope I got it right, because I don’t have any booklet or lyrics. It’s been quite a while since a new name could impress me this much. Buy their CD’s online, they deserve it. (Thank you, Antonie for bringing this band to my attention) |
