nederlands Review

This is the umpteenth album from the Mike Varney stable on which a well-known guitarist tackles some classic blues & rock tracks. Michael Schenker has done it, George Lynch, Leslie West, Jake E. Lee… Pat Travers, too, and I can remember being not too excited about his previous effort, P.T. Power Trio (2003). Now he’s released a follow-up to this record, simply titled P.T. Power Trio 2, on which he is backed up by bassist Steve Evans and drummer Jeff Martin, who also handles some of the lead vocals. The songs they cover this time are:

‘You Are The Music’ (TRAPEZE), ‘I’m Yours, She’s Mine’ (JOHNNY WINTER), Stone Cold Fever (HUMBLE PIE), ‘Rock Me Baby’ (BB KING), ‘Green-Eyed Lady’ (SUGARLOAF), Black Night' (DEEP PURPLE), Aimless Lady (GRAND FUNK RAILROAD), 'Swlabr' (CREAM), 'Red Skies' (JAMES GANG), ‘Ready For Love’ (BAD COMPANY / MOTT THE HOOPLE), 'Rock The Nation' (MONTROSE), 'How Many More Times' (LED ZEPPELIN) and 'Keep Yourself Alive' (QUEEN).

I have to say I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with this sort of albums. On the one hand, I don’t think the versions we get here add anything to the originals. Sure, they’re played well, but these versions are hardly very imaginative – mostly staying very close to the originals. And we’re not exactly waiting for that.

On the other hand, you can’t deny that these are some of the very best rock classics that have even been written. And it is very hard to resist those soaring guitar solos Travers plays so well. It is not surprising then that the results vary quite a lot. I quite enjoy songs like ‘Green-Eyed Lady’, ‘Stone Cold Fever’ and ‘Aimless Lady’. It’s especially the more well-known songs, like the BADCO, PURPLE, ZEP and QUEEN tracks, that fall flat.
