Parhelia
is a 4 piece talented instrumental band from Dublin - Ireland who
play modern refined atmospheric prog-rock and recently released
their debut EP “First Light”. Since the release they have undertaken
tours in Ireland and Norway and played the Irish leg of the
‘Download Festival’. The music isn’t that complex at all and not
that heavy; but an intense creating of a moody Atmosphere. Those
five songs are based on smooth guitar riffs, bass and drums, whereby
keyboards and samples brighten the atmosphere. Perfect music to
chill out; created to lay back in your lazy chair and relax or
listen to in the background. As influences I’d like to mention
Porcupine Tree and Anathema, but also influences from
Eloy & Mogwaï can be found. The first song “First Light”
is the shortest and slowest track on the EP. Typical to this song is
the in echo drenched guitar with sometimes a more spacey guitar
sound. “A Second Changes Everything” is a more robust song whereby
the structure is build round guitar chords and some riffs. In one
way or another this song do reminds me of beautiful landscapes
somewhere in the dessert while it gave me a oceanic feel in other
parts of the song. “Cloudbreak” is an impressive song and meanwhile
the most technical song on the album. It raises the tempo a bit….
from soft melancholic guitars to catchy riffs in the middle of the
song. A bit of a U2 like sound with a bit of a grunge feel - due to
the detuned guitar maybe? Also “Ebb/Flow” has a bit of this U2 like
sound in the guitar but with a more edged sound. Though, it’s
definitely a prog-rock track. “Waves Turns” really let me dream away
like the weight upon my shoulders became lighter the more I got into
the song. The catchy melody on the beginning of the song captivate
me and lift me of the ground. The titles of the tracks compliment
each other just like the songs on this EP blend into each other. The
production is really good and sounds very clear. Parhelia
knows how to bring emotion and passion into a song and captivate in
a moody song without using a word! |
