Are you one of the many who also find that Don Henley releases far too few albums? Well, then maybe Martin Briley might be the perfect alternative for you. He moves in more or less the same waters as the master with his mix of aor, westcoast and quality pop rock. Briley’s name might not immediately ring a bell, but he is by no means an inexperienced musician. He was a member of MANDRAKE and GREENSLADE, and has written songs for diverse artists such as Celine Dion, Jeff Healey, Pat Benatar, NIGHT RANGER, Kenny Loggins, Gregg Allman, Nana Mouskouri, Barry Manilow, Michael Bolton and many others. He has also recorded and performed with Meat Loaf, Ellen Foley, Ian Hunter, Julian Lennon, Jim Steinman, Olivia Newton-John, Tom Jones, Cliff Richards, Bonnie Tyler, Charles Aznavour… the list is endless. As a solo artist, he recorded three albums in the 80’s, and enjoyed quite a bit of success with his hit single ‘The Salt In My Tears’ (1983). If you’re looking for high-energy melodic rock, this isn’t the album for you. This is mostly smooth pop rock with an emphasis on good melodies and atmosphere. ‘Big Sun’ is a bit reminicent of the EAGLES. ‘I Don’t Think She Misses Me At All’ and ‘That Song’ will be appreciated by people who like Eric Clapton’s more recent work. My personal favourites are the bluesy ‘The Massage’, ‘Pray For Rain’ and especially the grand ‘In The Dim Light Of A Brand New Day’, which has some superb arrangements.
An excellent album for people who like to put on some nice,
laid-back pop rock once in a while. |
