english Review
Magnolia began in 1994 when Ronny Eriksson started to write his own music, inspired by music from the late sixties and early seventies. He played all the instruments, exept the drums (played by Anders Hedström).
On this debut album, he is playing with two family members (Tomas and Carl Frederik Eriksson), his girlfriend (vocals on “Försvunnen”), Love Tholin (who plays guitar with Jack Vreeswijk) and his old-time drummer: Anders.
The band plays heavy, progressive blues-rock, inspired by Cream, November, West Bruce & Lang and others. I have to tell that “Magnolia” really blew me away!
The first track: “Resa utan slut” is a piece of irresistible, vivaciously Swedish rock that stays in your head for the rest of the day! “Trollbunden” starts nice and easy and gets something dark and evil when you hear, halfway the record, very odd voices laughing (a bit Pink Floyd style): strange but it fits!
“Kvarnsten, “Forsvunnen” and “Stanna till!” are rocking’ away and “Magnolia” has a very vibrant, awesome ending, great, it reminds me of Jack Bruce… The same for “Natt blev dag”: it sounds very familiar: nice drums, wonderful guitar parts,, good song!
For something completely different is “Dalsändsk polska”: with fabulous trombone in it, touching, catchy, original!
Last but definitely not least: “Vem be stammer?” a song that explodes in a heavy guitar/bass/drums feast, that makes you wonder why you did not hear from this guys before: brilliant!
