Fans of La Tulipe Noire can now sleep soundly. Although, I wouldn’t advise it because they’d probably miss out on a large part of this album and that would be a sin! Without a doubt, this album is a worthy successor to ‘Faded Leaves’. All the ingredients that made an impact on the last album can be found again on this new one. Once again, the compositions are strong and have a good melody that sticks with you after a few listening sessions. For those who have forgotten which category of style this music falls into, I’d just like to say that they fit well with Marillion (the older stuff), Genesis (the middle period) and certainly with Clepsydra. Even the voice of Ima sounds like the voice of Alvisio Maggini. Her accent is just less obvious and she’s a woman, of course J. This is definitely neo-prog and neo-prog at its best! The nice, elaborate CD (and booklet) opens with a strong, instrumental, keyboard-oriented song. This immediately sets the trend for high expectations, which are then fulfilled. The excitement builds with each passing song. The vocals of the singer and the precision guitar parts of Kostas (set among a vast backdrop of keyboards) really live up to their true potential. The only negative point is that there are fewer guitar solos on this CD than on ‘Faded Leaves’. La Tulipe Noire really deserves the chance to be rated at their true value within this genre of music. The quality of ‘Nostimon Hemar’ certainly won’t be preventing that from happening. A top album! |
