Jim Peterik is a songwriter monument. Of course, he wrote numerous hits for his own band Survivor, but he also composed songs with and for 38 Special, Sammy Hagar, REO Speedwagon, Cheap Trick, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Brian Wilson and many others. He’s still writing diligently for other artists, apart from making new music for his solo work, the World Stage project, The Ides Of March and his new band Pride Of Lions. “Above The Storm” starts with two very good rock songs, “Live Life” and “Burning With A Reason”. Both have a southern rock feel and quite resemble some 38 Special tracks, which Peterik wrote for them. Incidentally, 38’s Donny Van Zant and his brother Johnny (Lynyrd Skynyrd) co-wrote several songs for this album. As a vocalist, Jim Peterik doesn’t have the range some of the singers he’s worked with have (Jimi Jamison, Toby Hitchcock, Dave Bickler), but he does have a pleasant, warm voice, which fits the music very well. The title track is one of several ballads – the kind Peterik has often proven to be so good at. Sadly, not all of the ballads are of the same quality as this one. I found “A Kiss To Remember You By” and “A Talent For Loving You” a bit sappy and rather tedious. The brass-laden “Secrets Of A Woman”, “Hiding From Yourself” and “At This Time Of Night” don’t do too much for me either. But then there are more than enough great songs like “In The Days We Have”, “We Believe” and the album’s masterpiece, “Midnight In My Soul” – which features a great Hammond sound a terrific background vocals. This is quite a good album – Peterik’s skills as a songwriter, singer and musician are beyond all doubt and “Above The Storm” has the songs to prove that. It’s just that the album is a bit uneven, with a bit too many fillers. I’m sure Peterik fans won’t be disappointed, though. |
