The American trio Greylevel takes us right back to the
beginning of Porcupine Tree. There is the timid voice of
Derek Barber, occasionally doubled in a nice harmony by his wife
Esther. Instrumentally the emphasis is on climates and moods,
cross-cut by acoustic and electric guitars from Derek and good
friend Richard Shukin. Atmospheric progrock rules on “Opus One”,
though the shortcomings of this debut are obvious. The playing
sounds rather stereotypical, which for a large part is due to the
programmed percussion. Why not involve a live drummer?
Composition-wise, it is almost mature, so underneath the digital
surface of this first-born there must be some more potential.
