Ha ha, these Swedes definitely have a sense of humour. On their MySpace page, the oddly named GÖSTA BERLINGS SAGA (apparently named after a famous Swedish novel) describe themselves as “that band your unmarried, childless uncle with that beard and the weird smell likes”. And you know what? They’re probably right: I like it and I happen to be unmarried, childless and I have a beard. Don’t know about the smell, though ;-) Like so many releases on the Transubstans label, this music might just as well have been recorded in the early 70’s. Song structures, sound, even the cover design… everything is done to recreate that 70’s atmosphere. This isn’t always effective – I find many of the releases on this label mediocre at best. Not so with GÖSTA BERLINGS SAGA’s Tid Är Ljud, as they certainly do a great job at putting together an enjoyable (instrumental) album.
The first track, ‘Helgamarktz’ (yes, all song titles are in Swedish)
sounds like vintage CAMEL. The other songs echo bands like KING
CRIMSON, MAGMA and their countrymen ANGLAGARD. This is
progressive/psychedelic rock with a generous jazzy touch. Of course,
they never reach the heights of these big names, but this is hardly
the point. In the long list of Swedish retro rock releases, this one
definitely stands out. |
