Good news for devotees of the ol’ vinyl records – the Italian Black Widow label still stubbornly releases their albums both in cd and lp format. In the case of GOAD’s latest release, the live album In The House Of The Dark Shining Dreams, this is especially noteworthy, as the striking cover illustration will be even more impressive in large format. GOAD have been around for several decades, but they have never outgrown the underground status. Their music is decidedly 70’s sounding, clearly influenced by KING CRIMSON and early GENESIS. The cover of CRIMSONS’ ‘21st Century Schizoid Man’ is indicative of this, as it fits perfectly in the rest of GOAD’s repertoire. Maurilio Rossi’s vocals are very distinctive – the closest reference I can give is Mike Taylor, of the obscure New Wave Of British Heavy Metal band QUARTZ. Musically, the band is pretty noteworthy too. The use of flutes, saxophones, violins and heavy church organs makes them sound quite unique. Lyrically, mentions of H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe places GOAD in the Dark Progressive corner. An intriguing band, this GOAD. Worth checking out.
