“A modern day classic Rock band from Ireland” is what the promo calls Glyder. I can’t come up with a better description. Glyder is a young band of Irishmen who are barely in their twenties. They’ve already toured with Wishbone Ash and the John Sykes-led Thin Lizzy, and have met with rave reviews of their shows. Being from Ireland, it is hardly a surprise that a far more famous band from that country is the main influence for Glyder’s music. The sound, the guitars, the vocals, the songwriting, the name of the record label (Bad Reputation),… they all refer to Thin Lizzy. For their debut album, the band even hired famed Lizzy producer Chris Tsangarides to make the connection even more obvious. Well, the band have certainly managed to produce a great collection of songs. No fillers in sight - every track is a little jewel in its own right. “Colour Of Money”, “PUP3” and “Die Or Dance” are great, powerful rockers. “She’s Got It”, with its AC/DC-like intro, is also one of the highlights. “One For The Lost” and “You Won’t Bring Me Down” are first-rate, moody pieces. Great musicianship, heartfelt vocals and an all-round energetic attitude. Best track on the album is “Stargazer”, which manages to bring together all qualities of the band in one song. After a first listen, the band sounded a bit too derivative for me. But a couple of more spins have made me feel comfortable with the band, and they’ve certainly won my heart with their class, power, freshness and enthusiasm. Excellent stuff. |
