FROM BEHIND: Game Over!
Release
Style
7,5/10 Two heavyweights in rock history join forces in the new
band FROM BEHIND: guitarist Manny Charlton (ex-NAZARETH) and
vocalist Nicky Moore (ex-SAMSON/MAMMOTH) – in case of the latter,
‘heavyweight’ can be taken quite literally, incidentally. On
this album, they are joined by four Swedish musicians - Mikael Fässberg,
Frederik Borg, Andreas Grufstedt and Carl Michael Hildesjö. FROM BEHIND’s music harks back to the glorious
70’s: heavy rock, boogie, blues, southern rock,… the references
to bands like BLACK SABBATH, NAZARETH, MOLLY HATCHET, LYNYRD SKYNYRD
and HUMBLE PIE are obvious (the cover art even refers to HUMBLE
PIE’s 1980 album On To Victory). Game
Over!
blasts off with the heaviest track of the album, the excellent
‘Queen Bitch’. ‘Catwalk’ is a nod to Charlton’s past in
NAZARETH, while ‘Family’ pays homage to BLACK SABBATH, including
the heavy riffs and Moore’s OZZY-imitation in the intro. ‘Play
Dirty’ brings back memories of Moore’s days with SAMSON. My
favourite is the very melodic ‘Size Doesn’t Matter’. I’ve
always been a fan of the extraordinary Nicky Moore. He screams,
growls and howls like never before, but it’s especially on slower
songs like the acoustic ballad ‘Picture’, ‘Gone’ and the
blues of ‘Boneman’ that his voice really shines – his bluesy,
heartfelt singing is priceless here. It’s a pity that the potential this band clearly has,
is never fully realized. With a three-guitar line-up, they could
have done so much more in this aspect. The compositions aren’t
always top-notch, either. Still, this is a fine old-school hard rock
album, which you should definitely try out if you’re into this
kind of music.
