F/i
is a psychedelic rock formation from Milwaukee who spawned a space
rock scene in the eighties. Influenced by Hawkwind, Blue cheer,
but also the German avant garde rock scene as set by Guru Guru,
Ash Ra Temple & Agnition free as well the more industrial sounds
as Throbbing Gristle & Nurse With Wound. Over time, F/i has
influenced a whole new generation exploratory instrumentalists. This
re-release of the former album which has been issued by Strange
Attractors Audio House but now including the bonus track “The Hot
Shop”. This CD marks the return of Richard Franecki who left the
band in 1990 in order to explore other musical paths with his band
Vocokesh. The music on this album is a reflexion of dark and
mystic landscapes, hypnotic textures laced with electronics and
experimental guitar riffs. The first song on the CD is filled by
flanger- effect guitar sounds completed by electronic keyboards and
reminded me of some old Hawkwind songs. Driven by a monotone
rhythm, it is the cosmic sound and the guitar solo that makes this
song a bit interesting but with its 13:49, it seems a bit too long
for me. “Hit The Kill Switch, Eugene” is based on a drum pattern
with a firm guitar tune, further to its climax it sounds less
boring. The third one “Keep the Third Eye Open” is more quiet, and
although the melody sounds nice at the beginning, it gets boring
after a few minutes. For “Surgical Procedures on the Ship” F/i
chose to go more electronically. The sound can best be compared
to the bubbling of fluids evolving to a more cosmic atmosphere.
“Using Enemy Weapons” has a darker side and reminds me vaguely of
some slow older New wave hits a la Bauhaus but they are also
too long. “No Pepsi In Kabul” sounds pretty eastern. Even though
this sounds amusing, you keep waiting for the climax. “Prelude to
the Afternoon of a Daisy Cutter” is a welcome change after on this
album. F/i succeeds in keeping the middle between quiet
numbers and rhythm. The title number “A question for the
somnambulist” is the longest number where only the middle part is
somewhat long-winded. The Bonustrack “The Hot Spot” is the number
that has the most appeal. Since this can be taken as the most
representative for the new sound of F/i, I can only say that
F/i is on its way to success with this new material. |
