EASTWEST is a band that started out in 2000, when Nick Rothero began jamming with keyboard player Ian Stichbury and bassist Dave Davies. Bill Joyce joined the band in 2004, replacing original drummer Ron Counte. On the band’s second album, EyeWitness, guitarist/vocalist Nick Rothero has written a number of fine compositions, ranging from early PINK FLOYD-like psychedelica to late 60’s rock, a bit of folk and even a DIRE STRAITS (‘Heavy Fuel’ / ‘Money For Nothing’) soundalike, ‘Totalitarian Police State Blues’. Other influences you might recognize are GRATEFUL DEAD and early WISHBONE ASH, while they also mention THE BYRDS and THE DOORS as inspiration. Highlights include the multi-part ‘Lost Cities’, parts I & II and the introspective ‘Dead Summer’. They’ve also included two cover songs: Nick Saloman’s ‘Portobello Man’ and a truly brilliant version of ‘Feeling Good’, a song that originally appeared in the musical The Roar of the Greasepaint—the Smell of the Crowd and was covered by diverse artists such as Nina Simone, Sammy Davis Jr., MUSE and (hold on) PUSSYCAT DOLLS.
A
band definitely worth keeping an eye on… |
