Recently this Florida-based quintet was positively noticed on these
web pages with their live album “Live At RoSFest 2005”. Here the
band’s new epic was introduced, “In A World”, serving as the
warming-up song for the eponymous second studio album. We hear some
very fine power sympho that regularly flirts with AOR. Todd Plant’s
powerful voice is more at home in the latter category. But also less
evident styles are given some attention; the title song displays
real fragments of Bossanova and flamenco! This stylistic versatility
is due to main songwriter Rick Duncan, a prolific composer who
collaborated with members from super groups Chicago and
Steely Dan. So this album contains real songs with heads and
tails, while yet the individual musicians are allowed to stretch
out, probably to the prog listener’s satisfaction. We have for
instance Kansas violinist David Ragsdale and the roaring
Rickenbacker signature bass handled by Sam Conable. The complex
arrangements and rich harmonies underline in colour the overall
progressive character of the follow-up to the band’s debut “Moments
of Clarity”. Echo’s from Spock’s Beard (the album features an
Alan Morse guest performance) and Salem Hill are evident. The
influence from Yes shines through the band’s positive view on
the state of the world; tracks have names here like “The Dream” and
“I Am the Energy”. The record ends quite symphonically with “The
Dream” part two and an abbreviated reprise of the title track, in
such a way that an album concept is suggested. |
