Blue Tears was formed in 1983 as a coverband, playing songs from Van Halen, Queen and Def Leopard, amongst others. After three years, they began to write their own songs, with Gregg Fulgerson (who wasn’t the vocalist at the time) as the main songwriter. They were discovered by Jon Hornyak in 1989, and acquired a record deal with MCA. Their debut record “Blue Tears” was recorded in the “Capitol Studio’s” in Hollywood, and produced by David Cole (Melissa Etheridge, Bob Seger). Because of the changes in the music industry in the early 90’s, and the mayor labels no longer interested in rock, the recordings for their next album never saw the light of day. The band split up in 1993, and it wasn’t until 2005, when those unpublished songs where made available on two compilation cd’s. The band was reformed by Bryan Wolski and Gregg Fulkerson, and a brand new record was made. You could be forgiven for thinking that “The Innocent Ones” is a new Bon Jovi record, because the similarities, both in style and sound, are astounding. “Drive” and “Let It Rain” are both rockers in traditional Jovi-style. “Run For Your Life” has a great sing-along chorus, with wonderful harmony vocals. “The Innocent Ones” is a more mellow song, while “Save Yourself” is a nice ballad with definite hit-potential. “Fast Times” definitely did not steal its name, for it is an up-tempo rocker with a driving rhythm. “In Your Dreams” and “She Wants To Be A Star” both have catchy refrains, and could potentially be hitsongs for Blue Tears. The ballad “All The Way Home” is a nice acoustic guitar song, while “Gloryland” and “Money To Burn” actually reminded me of Bruce Springsteen in his glory days with the E Street Band. “Break My Heart” is a slow, sensitive song, and “Silent Scream” is an impressive composition. A piano was used for “Unrequited Love”, a beautiful and sensitive song, that would be a awesome single.
“The Innocent Ones” from Blue Tears may not be the most
original album, it’s certainly recommended for fans of great melodic
rock from the 80’s. |
