Those Americans seem to have the monopoly on progressive music that
flirts insanely with jazz rock. Happy The Man put the
standard in the seventies; today also French TV, A Triggering
Myth and (though more rock than jazz) Echolyn are
swimming in the same waters. Being a typically transatlantic genre,
jazz is difficult to keep away from in the US prog scene. On their
sixth instrumental album ‘The Remedy of Abstraction’, A
Triggering Myth seems to have discovered the ideal synthesis
between jazz and sympho. The fretless bass and the piano betray the
jazz roots of founders Tim Drumheller and Rick Eddy. The guitar (by
Scott McGill, formerly with Finneus Gauge and playing on the
previous ATM record), the synth runs and the remarkable
contributions of Akihisa Tsuboy (violinist with Japanese band KBB)
send the thorough and original compositions into progressive
territory. The tasteful drumming by Vic Stevens (such a beautiful
cymbal stroke!) enhances the album even more. All instrumentalists
perform on a very high level by the way, triumphing in the creation
of rich sound colours. There is no hollow virtuosity or endless
noodling here, but adventurous songs that definitely lead to
somewhere and at the same time play with the listener’s
expectations. “Not Even Wrong” and “When Emily Dickinson Learned To
Lunge” are the highlights on an album every prog amateur who likes
jazz rock even in the slightest sense, should own. No doubt, A
Triggering Myth is continuing the artistic spring the US prog
scene is currently enjoying. |
