Willowglass is the project name of Andrew Marshall, a multi-instrumentalist who has played in various local Yorkshire based bands and who has just released his first solo album.

The only support Marshall got came from drummer Dave Brightman, quite an achievement, but often also the source of incompleteness. I can’t get rid of the feeling that a musician who plays one main instrument has more access to the very soul of that instrument.

Though suffering from this incompleteness, Willowglass still is a good album. There’s no doubt that Marshall has been influenced by various symphonic rock bands. The guitar solo in “Remembering” shows a lot of similarity to Pink Floyd’s “Echoes” while the intro and some other parts of “Garden” remind of Genesis’s “The Carpet Crawlers”. This latter band is also to be recognized in the synthesizer solo (and drumming) in “Tower of the King’s Daughter”.

The songs (all instrumental) are nice to listen to, but I’m afraid there’s a bit too many  ‘clean’ synthesizer sounds. Don’t expect breathtaking music, but I’m sure that a lot of Symphonic rock fans will enjoy relaxing while listening to this album. The short “Interlude No.1” on classical guitar for instance is like a precious jewel. Summarizing I think that Marshall has a lot of potential as a composer and I can only hope that he forms a band to play his music with and that he finds a record company that takes care of the production.
