Tin Scribble started out with the fall of The House Of Usher. Not the Edgar Allen Poe story, but the progressive rock band from Detroit that published their sole album “Body of Mind” back in 1998. Guitarist and composer Michael Allen Moore then went looking for a different sound that would fit nicely into the art-rock category. ‘Children of Saturn’ contains some stuff that can really blow your mind. The music is dark yet tuneful, and straight-out progressive. The emphasis is on melodic guitars creating a haunting climate. I guess some lyrics deal with the recent terrorist events in the US in a critical way (but unfortunately, no booklet!), so you end up with a politically incorrect album. Michael Allen Moore becomes the Michael Moore of prog! Mm, sounds obvious, doesn’t it? Interestingly, these topics are dealt with in a metaphorical sense. It still is prog, hey. Musically, you could trace down influences as diverse as Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, Rush and Tool. But in order to get a real idea, think of a blend of Porcupine Tree and Timothy Pure, without sounding derivative at all. The two guitarists provide dark textures with shifting moods. They bring Steven Wilson and Robert Fripp to mind. Synthesizers and flute are sparsely used, but they pop up at the right moment to increase the drama. The sinister melodies are wonderfully supported by pulsing bass and very classy art-rock drumming. You have to get used to Moore’s vocals, since they tend to stretch out sometimes! ‘Children of Saturn’ is a captivating concept album that requires listening as a whole to be the most effective. The theme is unsettling, which is rather rare in prog. I wouldn’t be surprised if you immediately get hooked by this independently released gem. |
