Another science fiction concept album hits the racks – this time around it’s Portugal’s Hugo Flores (Sonic Pulsar) who has come up with a space opera story about an artificial world, which is leaving a dying planet in order to find a new home for the population. As an SF buff, I’m always happy to see musical releases of this type released, although it has to be said – this is hardly an original concept. The same thing can be said about the music. Fine songs, excellently played with obvious passion, but the influences (a.o. Eloy, Ayreon in particular) are a bit too obvious for comfort. This is pretty powerful progressive rock, with the odd side-step towards metal, and with lots of beautiful atmospherical passages, featuring a multitude of different instruments (flutes, sitar, cello, recorder, saxophone,…), which make for a very rich sound. The male vocals are good, but not really impressive - unlike the female vocals (Alda Reis), which make up for a lot. Best songs are the ones which use the atmospherics to its fullest potential: the title track, ‘Arriving’, ‘Artificial Satellite’, ‘Creating Atmosphere’ and ‘Cheops’. The latter in particular is a great song.
‘Floating World’ never reaches the heights of the aforementioned
influences, but it is a solid album in its own right. Special
mention should also go to Mattias Norén, who created a booklet
filled with stunning artwork which visualizes the story perfectly. |
