Matze Wurm was born in 1978 in Germany. He started playing guitar at the age of 15. His musical education began with private lessons by ‘Ralf Jung’. After a couple of years he decided to study guitar at the Munich Guitar Institute, Germany and at the L.A. Music Academy, Pasadena, USA and graduated in 2004. Under his instructors were guys like Frank Gambale (Chick Korea), Jeff Richman (Manhattan Transfer), Steve Fister, Dave Hill, Bill Fowler, Brad Rabuchin (Ray Charles), Wolfgang Zenk (Sieges Even), Horst Polland & Uli Widenhorn. He played workshops with Harald Kuempfel (Bullyparade) & Philip Bynoe (Steve Vai). Matze's main influences are Dream Theater, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Wes Montgomery. In his early years, he got the possibility to record a CD at the age of 17 with Appendix and played as support act of Crematory & Blind Guardian. After a couple of years gigging around with different bands & playing some TV gigs, he joined the band Jezebel's Tower. With that band, he peaked the Radio Charts seven times, played as support of Iron Maiden, was import-CD number one in Tokyo Disc Heaven and got 89/100 points in the world's biggest heavy magazine ‘Burrn’. In June 2004, he joined Snailworks, where he was asked by Tino after playing a clinic for Randall amps at the Musikmesse in Frankfurt. Snailworks plays Dream Theater influenced stuff. After the first rehearsals, they already recorded three own songs and wrote another three. Matze is an endorsing Artist of several renowned music factories. During his clinics for Randall Amplifiers he played sessions with Robbee Mariano (Xavier Naidoo), Magnus Rosen (Hammerfall) & Mark Meadows (Dweezil Zappa). Matze is also the new guitar player of Alias Eye, currently recording their third CD. In December 2005, Matze released his first Solo Mini-CD “Truth is stranger than fiction”. Since the 6th of January, 2006, he is under contract with Progrock Records. With that info in mind, you can figure out that this solo album is a very guitar orientated one. The first song “Indulcing my passion” is a quit impressing instrumental with a variety of musical styles while “The dream between pleasure and pain” is a straight one with a poppy structure but also in this one beautiful guitar work. The third song “Lost” is the second one with vocal work from Philip Griffiths. “Crossbreeding snails” is another instrumental with nice guitar work, tricks and licks. Matze got his own typical guitar sound without copying other guitar players, a positive thing I like to mention. “On my knees” is just like the second song a more straight and puppy one and a rest point on the album. With “The mysterious meeting of Mr. Hoss and Mr. Sing” we get to the last one. In this one, all the musicians show their talents in less than 3 minutes. The song is influenced by some Dream Theater pieces I suppose, lots of breaks, lots of talented work. For me the best on the whole album. For myself, the vocals are the minus on the whole album… Griffiths voice gets a kind of boring after a while due to the fact that he’s got a good voice to sing but maybe not for this type of music but that’s a matter of taste I think.
