From an early age on, Swedish musicians Mats Öberg and Morgan Ägren appeared to be musical prodigies. Soon they were familiar with the music of Frank Zappa. In 1984 they formed a Zappa cover band en were noticed by the radical American artist. Zappa became their mentor en primary musical influence. They also recorded albums with Zappa’s children. In 1996 Mats & Morgan’s debut was released; the critics were enthusiastic about the versatility of their music. “Thanks For Flying With Us” is their first release for the adventurous Cuneiform label (Univers Zero, Djam Karet) and shows a mature band with remarkable skills. No wonder M&M are praised by famous musicians such as Bill Bruford and Steve Vai. The influences stretch from The Beatles and American jazz to Univers Zero and King Crimson. M&M juggle with rhythms, grooves and beats in an inimitable fashion. Their highly original music testifies of a compositional complexity that might put you off at first. This record will therefore be not everyone’s cup of tea. The jazz oriented prog fan who fancies a sonic adventure should at least give this album a try. |
