Manila Thrills
is an hard rock act of the middle eighties. With this release the
band brings their recorded material back to attention on CD. It was
vocalist Michael Thomas Beck that re-mastered the songs in digital
quality. This album also includes 4 previously unreleased bonus
tracks. The music can be best described as melodic hard rock of the
middle and late eighties in the style of
krokus, Dokken,
etc… That makes that you hear recognizable hard rock with elements
you might have heard before and nothing really new but who bothers?
I think everyone of us sometimes grabs an old favorite album to
listen too. In that case the “Tomorrow's waiting” of Manila
Thrills
is a welcome change to hear some new songs with an old recognizable
sound. From start on in “Gypsy blood” the band really rocks your
heart out. Songs like “Tomorrow’s waiting” – “Inhibitions” –
“Slippin’ thru the cracks of a Dream” – “you’re on your own” are all
great up-tempo rockers and songs like “Just gotta go” has catchy
choruses that sticks in your head. With “Rain” there’s also room for
an acoustic spot. Rusty Churchman’s guitar work is typical for that
era through the hole album, just like the rest of the rhythm
section.
John Ogle’s
drums have been tightly played supported by a more basic bass work
of
Lars Owens.
Michael Thomas Beck sings in the high regions without missing a
note. Even in more calming songs like “The long wait” and “Hold on
to tomorrow” his voice is great. There’s also enough room for
harmony and backing vocal work in the songs. The new and previously
unreleased tracks are in the same line s the old stuff. The song
structure of the numbers isn’t that complex and you can hardly
predict what is next to come but I enjoyed this album playing it
over and over again. |
