When frontman Michael Bormann left Jaded Heart in 2004, everybody thought it would mean the end of this great German band. Their search for a replacement singer has been a hard and difficult task, especially because Michael put such an important stamp on the sound of Jaded Heart. Not only his typical voice, but also his compositions had a great reflection on the band’s style up until now. Somehow, however, it seems they succeeded in finding a great replacement with ex-Scudiero singer Johan Fahlberg. His voice is significantly different from Michael’s, but he fits in perfectly with the new songs. It’s still a typical Jaded Heart album though, and the fans will be pleased there isn’t a considerable change in their style. In fact, many will find this to be their best album yet! “Helluva Time” starts great with the amazing rocker “Tomorrow Comes”, which immediately demonstrates the vocal talents of Johan. The album then goes on to reveal a great selection of varied compositions. Hard driving rockers like “Dreams You’ll Never See” and “Love To Live” are alternated with great mid-tempo songs like “Hole In My Heart” and “Somewhere”, while the beautiful ballad “Without You” actually reminded me of The Scorpions. Only one cover can be found here, and it is a remarkable version of Anastasia’s “Paid My Dues”. The technical prowess of the band is noteworthy, and it’s a joy to listen to the way these musicians play, while at the same time giving each other so much headroom for individual performances. That’s something quite extraordinary for a band in which all the instrumentalists like to take centre-stage. Jaded Heart produced this album themselves, and I have to say it sounds very crisp and professional.
It was a great pleasure to review this record. I’ve been listening
to it intensely for about a week now, and I’m still enjoying it as
much as the first time I played it. The songs are timeless, the
compositions are state-of-the-art and the sound is incredible. Fans
of Jaded Heart can buy this CD without hesitation, and for
those who don’t know the band yet, this record is the best
introduction imaginable. “Helluva Time” is not to be missed if you
like powerful, melodic rock music. Essential! |
