nederlands Review

In 2000 Hatfield’s End released a mysterious album titled “Stonehenge 4”. Comparisons were made with Camel, Pink Floyd and Mike Oldfield, but nobody knew the members of this band. The album sold well although I was rather disappointed by the lack of spirit this music showed. Five years later the myth has been revealed: Hatfield’s end is one single musician: Paul Hattink from Belgium.
This second album shows a technical perfection, the sound is great. But as in the first album, I miss a real spirit. This is no symphonic rock, neither is it new age, but it contains elements of both genres. There are nice fragments on this album, but there isn’t one track that blows me away. The Spanish guitar in both “Asian Wizardry” and “Revealing the Myth” is marvellous, but in a lot of songs the rhythm (a lot of often sterile electronic beats) seems to repeat itself and never was I surprised in any way. On the contrary, the comparisons with the bands mentioned before built up high expectations which the album can’t live up to.
Those who love the music of new age artist Medwynn Goodall will certainly like the album and I must admit that it is very nice as background music. As long as you don’t expect symphonic rock, the ethnic influences refer to new age rather than to rock.
Make sure to have a look a the website: stunning intro!
